What are some good performances by players in their final ever tournament?

Some of my picks,
Pete Sampras's last tournament ever, 2002 US Open. He freakin wins it.
Boris Becker at 1999 Wimbledon, he reaches the 4th round.

Discuss.

Nadal got 3 games against Federer at the WTF this year, and managed to somehow beat Mardy Fish

I didn't see his retirement mentioned in the papers.

Henners' last tourny was 2007 Davis Cup tie v Croatia, which he helped win.
Safin took a set off Del Potro in Paris '09, just a couple of months after he had won USO.
Edberg reached Paris QF in 1996.

Nicolas Lapentti's last event was Davis Cup, I believe. He won that tie.

Actually, I don't think anyone could top Sampras. I mean, who else who could win a Slam at their very last tournament?

The closest thing could've been Goran had he decided to call it quits once he won Wimbledon in 2001.

Agassi in 2006 U.S. Open. Beats Baghdatis in 5 tight sets to make it to the third round. That match was epic!

That was definitely an amazing match!!! Not the quality by itself but the drama and level of intensity of not only the players but the entire crowd was amazing! The atmosphere was great. You had to be there to know how amazing it was. I was really lucky to see that match live that day.

that match was awesome but you had to wonder at some point if they were just being theatrical for the fun of it! Andre having his back issues and then Baghdatis acting like was injured too... not sure if he was either way but it was fun.

of course there was so much anticipation during this tournament involving Agassi, with everyone knowing it would be his last. one of the most memorable matches I've seen, and even his loss in the next round was quite special due to the speech.

of course it's Agassi, so his final tournament to be in America was so fitting and so great no matter how he preformed!:worship:

36 year old Wayne Arthurs reached 3rd in Wimbledon in 2007, and he had to qualify, so he won 5 matches before losing to Bjorkman in round3.
In the first round he was two sets and a break down(6-7 6-7 2-4), before he came back. in the 2nd round he has beaton world nr7. Tommy Robredo

Sampras' 2002 USO title, not only won his last event ever in professionally, but won it over his long time rival Agassi.

Let's compare how other players did in their final events.

2000 - In his last ever event, 4 time Slam champ Jim Courier loses in the 2nd round to Thomas Enqvist in Tennis Masters Series Miami. His last slam performance was a 1st round exit Nicolas Escude in 4 sets at the 2000 Australian Open.

2003 - In his last ever event, the former French Open champ Michael Chang loses in the first round of the 2003 US Open to Fernando Gonzalez in 4 sets.

2004 - the 2001 Wimbledon champ, Goran Ivanisevic's last tournamet was the 2004 Wimbledon where he loses in the 3rd round to Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets.

2003 - Former Wimbledon winner Richard Krajicek goes down in the first round in Ordina Open in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands to Oliver Mutis.

2006 - The Scud, Mark Phillipousis goes down in the 2nd round of a challenger in Hawaii to Brendan Evans and his last Slam performance was a straight sets exit to Rafa Nadal at the 2006 US Open. I would say his ending was pretty dismal.

2001 - One of the better endings for a career was Patrick Rafter's. At least he made he ended his career on a high. His last match was a Davis Cup clinching match against Sebastien Grosjean in the 2006 Davis Cup finals. His slam performance was a 4th round showing and bowing out to Pistol Pete Sampras at the 2001 US Open.
