2012 Olympics

With all the talk of the 2012 Olympics heating up, I figure I start up a thread about Canada's participation in the 2012 Olympics for tennis.

So a few questions come to my mind,
1. is Daniel Nestor gonna team up full time with a Canadian next season to prepare for Olympic doubles and if so, who? Vasek? I sure wish Lareau was still around. Him and Nestor were awesome together. Too bad he didn't stick around for a full time doubles career like Nestor did.
2. Who will represent Canada at the Olympics for singles? Milos? Vasek?
3. is the tournament gonna be on grass? If so, that will favor Nestor, Raonic and Pospisil big time.

Re: 2012 Olympics

This really all depends on the rankings of Milos and Vasek next year since the top 56 in the world on June 11th qualify with a max of 4 per country.

I would say Milos will be at the Olympics but needs a good start to 2012 as he has lots of points to defend.

Vasek has a shot but needs a solid start to 2012 to get to the top 60.

If Vasek makes it I am guessing he teams up with Nestor if not Milos does as the Top 10 doubles players get in provided they have someone they can play with.

They are really the only 3 with a shot at making it. Anyone else would be a surprise.

If it were me,
Nestor should team up with Shamasdin full time for Olympic preparation, and for singles, Milos and Vasek should go to London.

I agree misty, I think it will just be Milos and Daniel there.

Re: 2012 Olympics

sorry for deleting my post there, but i realized i wasnt to sure what i was saying

but yeah, i dont see vasek making it high enough in the rankings to be selected for men. In all likelihood milos will be the only singles player..however with all milos has to defend early a bad start to the year could mean we have no men there. I dont think that will be the case but you all know me..

doubles..daniel will be there and he'll probably team with vasek since the 2 have had more experience together and success in davis cup. In fact i think id prefer daniel and vasek

ill state again that its looking grim for the women. Rebecca has alot to defend early next year and i dont see aleks or stephanie making the jump in time.

we dont have any good doubles players in the womens side so..

MEP's double ranking is around 120 so I don't think it will be high enough unless she can dramatically increase it.

Nestor has chosen Pospisil as his partner - makes sense to me:

Re: 2012 Olympics

I'm betting Vasek will get into singles as an alternate too. Niemeyer got in in 2008 when someone withdrew, and Vasek will be there for doubles like Neimeyer was.

Looks like Nestor has chosen Vasek to be his doubles partner according to Tennis Canada.

wouldnt he need a ranking in the 60's for that? when is the cutoff anyway?

I think the cutoff is after RG.

I'm not sure how exactly alts work, whether they actually have the next couple highest ranked players already over there in case, but Neimeyer was nowhere near ranked high enough in 08, but got in the draw as an alt because he was there for doubles anyway.

Maybe more players will be near London though since its in Europe and not China?

Re: 2012 Olympics

Maybe, though I'm expecting a few of them to be already over in the states playing Washington where they'd have a shot at some good points instead of staying in Europe hoping for a spot. Vasek's not that far out in the alt list anyway considering all the players who can't go due to the 4 per country thing, he would be one of the higher ranked guys who happen to be hanging around London/Europe.

It's not a sure thing obviosuly but it's definately a possibility
