Injuries Shake Up Late-Season Tournaments

Last week, we went over the calendar and thought about some of the complaints that top players have about the schedule. I havenít changed my mind in the past week. Even though there is a lot that can be done by the sport to help out the players, especially the lower-ranked ones, changing up the calendar isnít really one of them. The top ones, certainly, are in a position where they can afford to skip events to preserve their health and avoid long-term injuries.

That being said, it would be ridiculous to expect all of the top players in any sport to stay injury-free for the entire season. Tennis is no different. Players get worn down and banged up, so there is rarely a top event that is not missing one or two of the top players. And it makes sense that at the end of a long season we will see more injuries than in the middle.

Still, the growing list of top players who will not be competing in tournaments these next few months will have a major impact on who will qualify for the World Tour Finals. Robin Soderling, who early on this year looked like a lock to reach the Finals in London, has not competed since Wimbledon. He is suffering from mono and does not want to risk any long-term damage to his health. He has announced that he will not compete in the upcoming Masters event in Shanghai and there are serious rumors floating around that he may sit out the rest of the season at least.
