Draw for 2012 Davis Cup: World Group

BANGKOK, THAILAND: The Draw for the 2012 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group was made on Wednesday at the Four Seasons hotel in Bangkok. The first round ties will be played on 10-12 February.

This year's finalists Spain and Argentina, the top two seeds for 2012, received contrasting fortunes in the Draw, while the pick of the ties sees 32-time champions USA travel to Switzerland.

Spain, fresh from booking their place in the final with a 4-1 win over France at the weekend, will be at home against Kazakhstan in a first meeting between the two nations. The Kazakhs made their World Group debut in 2011 and went on to reach the quarterfinals.

Argentina, who defeated defending champions Serbia 3-2 to reach the final, face a tricky away clash with Germany. The Argentines lead their series 5-2, although they were whitewashed 5-0 the last time the two nations met on German soil, in 1991.

Switzerland and USA will be doing battle for the fourth time when they go head-to-head, and home advantage has always proved pivotal in the past with the Americans holding a 2-1 advantage. The Swiss only gained promotion to the World Group on Monday when they finally sealed a 3-2 victory over Australia after bad light stopped play on Sunday.

Another intriguing match-up sees France travel to newly promoted Canada, while defending champions Serbia are at home against Sweden. The remaining ties see Austria welcome Russia, Czech Republic host Italy, and Japan face Croatia.

Re: 2012 World Group draw
That is defintely a sucky draw for Canada :(
I would have preferred we play Croatia or Russia, hell even the Czechs instead of France.
The only bright side is that it will be played in Canada!

Re: 2012 World Group draw
Canadians have two interesting players in Poposil and Raonic.

lmao I just can't get rid of this off my mind; how it would be a miracle for the Swiss to win this title.

They have the most disheartening draw in probably Davis Cup history. Though I'll put this in a nice way, Federer will get his money's worth if they can go deep (think Federer vs. Fish, Federer vs. Tsonga, Federer vs. Nadal, Federer vs. Djokovic). Federer has always been a big fan of best of 5 sets, they are his favorites, so he'd get a ton of practice against top competitors because of this draw. That is if Stan can mentally keep focus. Stan has the material of a top 8 player, just not the mentality of one. Though I hope the win over Hewitt will pay off in terms of mental strength.

For me, Davis Cup always brings fun and entertainment and noise to a tennis match. Not able to forget the excitement for the draw, my heartbeat was faster than ever, the thrill was concealed also, may be because I was aware that Davis Cup is seeded.

Probably they think: "We beat them in May at the WTC on clay, so let´s play Davis Cup on clay, too :o"

You're right! (in German)

It's in Bamberg (Frankonia) in the arena of the German basketball champion. If NBA wouldn't start in december I would say: Oh Dirk Nowitzki will play.

it's a yearly thing. The World Group is the top 16 nations. Everyone else plays in lower groups trying to get to the top 16. The first round consists of 8 nation v. nation ties, and takes place in Febuary, the 8 winners go to the 2nd round and play 4 nation v. nation ties in july. Those 4 winners play in the semis in september and the winners from those ties play the final in December. The winner of the final is the Davis Cup champion for that year. Then it all starts over again the following year with 16 teams again, those 16 teams consist of the 8 first round winners from the year before, and the winners of 8 playoff matches which take place in september. The team playing in those playoff matches are the 8 first round losers from round 1, and 8 qualifiers who qualify from the lower groups.

Re: 2012 World Group draw
Things are looking very interesting now. Since Spain will enter Davis Cup with a talented but still weaker cast (probably Almagro and Verdasco as their representatives), Switzerland's side of the draw looks more optimistic.

Federer and Wawrinka's first test is U.S.A.

Their main opponents here are Fish, Roddick, and the Bryan brothers. I don't know if they can defeat the Bryan brothers again even if they come up with an alternative doubles squad. So U.S. gets the advantage there. Federer will get his singles against Fish/Roddick (NID). From here, Wawrinka just has to win one of his matches against Fish or Roddick. He could potentially lose to Fish, but I doubt his all around game would falter to Roddick as we saw him dismantle him at the U.S. Open.

Against France. Things get very difficult here. The French will probably take the doubles. Then pressure on Federer to win both singles. The French can arguably go with Tsonga and Simon against Federer. Then Tsonga and Monfils against Wawrinka to try and get the best out of it.

If the Swiss miraculously survive this, a potential Spain, Kazakhstan, Russia, or Austria, should be simple and a relief before the finals.

Then in the finals they'd get the option of either Serbia or Argentina. I would assume Serbia would come out on top in that affair.

Then There can be a Switzerland-Serbia final and that would be quite an affair :)

So a slight possibility of Federer facing Djokovic at DC, at the Olympics, and at the slams, in a single year if he decides to take all the tournaments seriously.
