Let's cut some grass in 2011.
Marin will play only two grass tournaments but i'll open the thread, maybe it helps.

He is practically defending nothing, last year he lost in first round of Wimbledon and Queens isn't in his "best 18" tournaments so he can only gain points here.

Queens draw gave him some lenience and because of Djokovic's withdrawal Marin became 8th seed and is free in R1.

Cilic (8) - BYE
Q - Paire
Ilhan - Hajek
Dimitrov - Belucci (11)

Tipsarevic (14) - Kavcic
Gremelmayr - Russell
Malisse - Bachinger
Murray (2) - BYE

He can gain immediate ranking points only if he reaches the semis (means wins this part of the draw i posted), and if he reaches QF he'll put 45 pts in back-up if need be (he has many those already though).

Wimbledon is another story, each win there will be worth alot for him.

Who can be the qualifier? I'm sensing something along the lines of Mahut could lurk there

Clement won 2-0 so Marin plays him next.

Aw Marin's on Court 1 tomorrow, so I won't get a chance to see him. Hopefully I'll see him on the practice courts! :)

Marin's interview after yesterday's match:

Croatian Marin Cilic is hoping to break back into the Top 20 of the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings as quickly as possible.

Speaking at the AEGON Championships on Wednesday, the World No. 27 admitted he had been working hard with his coach Bob Brett in preparation for the grass-court swing.

"I have worked on general things to get my game back," Cilic told "I feel I am playing better in practice and all my shots are improving.

"Physically I am improving too and when I put everything together I will do well in matches. I am trying to be more aggressive in matches, not to back off and start pushing more. If I miss a couple of strokes, I must stay positive and keep going."

So far this season, the 22 year old has reached five ATP World Tour quarter-finals (or better) this year, including a runner-up at the Open 13 in Marseille (l. to Soderling). He has a 23-12 match record.

Now, with turf under his feet and an aggressive serve-volley game he's hoping to build on a strong start at The Queen's Club for The Championships at Wimbledon.

"I feel pretty good so far," he admitted. "I have adjusted to the speed of the court and the bounce, but the movement is the critical part.

"I have fallen a couple of times on the slick grass, so you just need to be careful and take shorter steps than when you play on clay or hard courts. But that feeling will go away after a week and you can build all-round confidence.

"At the same time, it isn't necessarily the court speed you need to adjust to but the speed of the ball as compared to the balls we used at Roland Garros."

Cilic has a 16-11 lifetime record on grass-courts. He reached the AEGON Championships quarter-finals on his debut in 2007, when he lost to Andy Roddick. One year later, he posted a fourth round performance at Wimbledon (l. to Clement).

With 45 pts from Queens Marin should be seed no. 27 in Wimbledon, if no one ahead of him cancels. Draw is scheduled for 17.06.

Re: Let's cut some grass in 2011.
Marin unfortunately got a quite hard draw but can always hope:

Murray(4) - Gimeno-Traver
Kamke - Kavcic

Stakhovsky - Cox
Cilic(27) - Ljubicic

Already a hard match in R1 because i'm sure Ljubicic knows weaknesses that Marin has and will try to use them. I still think Marin is a small favourite though. 2nd round probably brings Stakhovsky who's a good player on grass and 3rd probably Murray.

Marin should watch some vids of Goran's run 10 yrs ago and try to do atleast 1 big scalp. :wavey:

Also reminder, Marin dropped out last year in first round so every win would be very valuable for his rank. Already reaching R32 and playing Murray would add 80 points to his total.

Today against Ebden in Queens. C'mon! :)

Re: Let's cut some grass in 2011.
Quite pleasantly suprised with the score today, specially because Ebden's best surface IMO is grass. Also stats look good, Marin faced only 1 BP in the whole match and even had MP at 5-0 to make it a bagel.

He will play next match tommorow against Rosol who beat Baghdatis. IMO a good chance to reach the QF. C'mon once more. :D

Re: Let's cut some grass in 2011.
Again a solid match today appart for the first two games. I don't think Lu would have any chance even if he didn't give up.

Tommorow against Querrey, Marin leads H2H 1:0. Two wins to title...

misty1 06-16-2012 03:32 PM

Re: Let's cut some grass in 2011.
6-3, 3-6, 6-3 over querrey

definately not the best match in the world, tons of errors from both

but a win is a win
