Jordan Cox

17-year-old Jordan Cox has reached the final of the Junior Wimbledon Championship, having defeated doubles partner Devin Britton 6-3, 6-7(5), 16-14 in the semifinals. That's right, 16-14. They showed match point on ESPN, and both players looked completely drained. There was no celebration. No fist pump. No scream. Not even a smile. Believe it or not, they are scheduled to play doubles later today.

Cox will face Russian Andrey Kuznetsov in the final after Kuznetsov upset Bernard Tomic. I don't know who to consider the favorite in that match. Kuznetsov has an ATP ranking in the 500s and is certainly more accomplished, but the surface might prefer Cox. Fortunately they have tomorrow off (I think).

This result makes Cox quite a puzzle. He had done very little in juniors until now, and has performed even worse in pro tournaments. His ITF ranking is 80. His career high ranking is 50. This could be a fluke. Perhaps he's finally coming into his own, or maybe he just thrives on grass. Then again, he lost 6-0, 6-1 in another grass court tournament last week. So what I'm saying is . . . I have no idea. There's a guy on the general board who watched is semifinal match who thinks he's promising. I have heard that he has some pop, so that's good.

If he wins this, he will have positioned himself for a men's U.S. Open wild card, which would be bad news for the veteran pros because I think Britton and Ryan Harrrison are highly likely to receive wild cards as well. Then add in the French and Australian wild cards. Then consider that another junior like Alex Domijan could win Kalamazoo and you could be down to as few as two wild cards for everyone else. That probably won't happen, but it could.

thanks for posting, looked like a fascinating match from what little epsn showed. Can't say I'd be upset if most of our juniors got the USO wildcards, that's what they should be used for anyway IMO

Cool win. It's a shame that the two weren't playing in the finals. I think they get the day off before the final (the OOP hasn't been released yet) so Jordan should be well rested. It's great to see a bunch of the young guys doing well.

I wouldn't mind either. I'm not sure there are even three good choices for wild cards among the vets. Levine made a case for himself at Wimbledon. He's the most likely vet to get one. Sweeting has big game but only sporadically plays well. Young has been awful minus one good week. Evans has done all right on the Challenger circuit but is far from a slam dunk. Dent did well in Miami and would be a popular choice with fans.

The pickings are fairly slim. None of those guys' results are trending very positively.

Good post (and thanks for the YouTube links btw). Sweeting and Evans both deserve one in my opinion if they have decent summers (they both bombed out of Winnetka in the first round so who knows). Same goes for Young, but probably a little more so since he literally has been terrible except for that one week. He's been doing well in Winnetka, though, so hopefully he'll pick it up. I would probably give one to Odesnik too unless he can boost his ranking and get direct entry. He's getting to be a little old, though, so he may be getting lower on the priority list.

One player who would have been completely out of the running until recently is Alex Kuznetsov. He's still young (22) and made a good run to a challenger final a couple months ago. He also just made the semis of Winnetka and has a good chance to go further. His ranking is still terrible (404), but that could improve quickly with a couple other good results. Obviously he has been absolutely terrible the past two years, but I have no problems with him getting a WC if he has a solid summer. I was able to see him against Almagro at the 2007 USO and although he lost I was still impressed. Unfortunately he has literally been miserable since then.

Cox, Britton, and Harrison should at least get qualy WC's. I'd give one to Domijan too.

Young lost to Smyczek in straight sets today. The hits just keep on coming. A couple good results can improve a player's chances in a hurry, but right now there's no way I'd give him a wild card.

I find it inconceivable that Britton won't get a main daw wild card. 99.9% chance he gets one. I'd put Harrison at 85% and Cox at 90% if he wins Sunday. Cox's mediocre record makes him less than a total lock even if he wins, but I still don't see the USTA denying the Junior Wimbledon champ a MD WC. Heck, Wimbledon has a history of giving MD WCs to the Junior Wimbledon champ regardless of nationality, and the USTA gives a qualifying WC to the previous year's Junior U.S. Open champ if it's a foreigner. Now, if he loses, he'll probably have to settle for a qualifying WC unless he backs this up with a couple more impressive results. Domijan will get a qualifying WC for sure, but he's also a threat to steal a main draw WC by winning Kalamazoo, especially if Britton doesn't play (and it sounds like he won't based on his comments in the interview). Winning a Futures event would put him in contention as well.

All other juniors will have to win Kalamazoo to have any chance of getting a MD WC.

Jordan lost 6-4 2-6 2-6 in the final. Caught sets 2 and 3 on livestream and I am gonna assume he was pretty fatigued because he played extremely poorly from what I saw. He's played a lot of tennis the last few days and maybe it caught up to him. Good run anyway, Kuznetsov is about 11 months older for what it's worth.

Re: Jordan Cox

He must be extremely disappointed. He probably cost himself U.S. Open and Wimbledon main draw wild cards by losing.

It's going to be interesting to see if this week was a fluke or the start of bigger and better things for him.
