2009 Davis Cup
I'm opening a thread because I don't know where to post the news, but it's not looking good for Gaël for this time, there was a problem with his plane, he will arrive in Ostrava only tonight, which means he will have only one day of training in Ostrava before Forget makes his decision for the final team.
 |
Re: 2009 Davis Cup
In the sport24 interview yesterday, he says again he entered Acapulco because he was not sure to be on the DC team at the time and it was somehow logical for him to play Acapulco before Indian Wells and Miami. I do understand his choice then, but I will never get why he thought after Doha that he wouldn't be on the Davis Cup team? He had just played one of his best matches ever in Doha!

Re: 2009 Davis Cup
He always change his mind  If he arrives tonight in Ostrava it means he had missed 4 days of train with the others  I continue to think he can be in team but we can't say he did everything to be in.

Re: 2009 Davis Cup
You mean that he will pay for it for the next ties? That he won't be picked anymore?
Or that if France loses, Gaël will get bashed for the Acapulco move? |
Re: 2009 Davis Cup
Exprimez le fond de votre pensée, les filles, je suis vraiment pas sûre de comprendre à quoi vous faites allusion avec "lui retomber sur la gueule".

Re: 2009 Davis Cup
"A problem? What problem?"
He arrived at the hotel yesterday at 18:25 and sounds a bit annoyed because all the media say he is already out of the team. He says he made a great effort to come, he explains the story with all the flights, he is a human being, he had to rest a little bit in Paris before taking the next plane to Ostrava. He wanted to start practicing immediately, but it was impossible because it was the time slot of the Czech team. The ITF rules don't anticipate a case like Gaël's. From an outside perspective, it's pretty clear Gaël is out and will play only if there is an injury in the French team. But Gaël doesn't agree, he says he's confident, he's playing well, is eager to play, so he is a "candidate" too in his opinion. "I don't know how Guy and the others see it... But the journalists are the ones who make a whole lot of fuss about it. I don't see the problem." :tape: For Navratil (Czech captain), he's definitely not an option anymore, players need one week to get ready for a DC tie, they arrived in Ostrava on Sunday, add to that all the flights and the jetlag, it's too late, period. But Forget says that his job is to make sure that all the players stay ready to play until the draw. Of course Gaël won't have the same preparation as the others, but it's important he's here too. And his teammates are defending him. Richard: "Gaël is a Martian. Nothing is impossible with him." Mika: "Exactly, nobody reacts like him. He's never stressed." Gilles is more moderate: it would be obviously wrong to say he had the best possible preparation. But the most important thing with Gaël is how he feels. If he thinks he can do it, everything is possible. Let's stop worrying about problems which apparently don't exist then. |
Re: 2009 Davis Cup
I meant that because of that his chances to be picked are strongly reduced which really angers me, and even if he is selected, if he loses we'll never hear the end of the Acapulco drama. The journos won't wait to be begged to go on and on about how Gaël doesn't care much about DC, unlike the others, etc, etc. I don't think it will influence his next selections but if one day, even in a few years he refuses a selection because he's injured or anything else, they will dig up the Acalpuco move, like we'll never hear the end of Richie's texts drama. The only way to get out of it, in my humble opinion, is for him to get selected and win at least one match, preferably the first to kill the drama in the egg. Then he will become the hero who can cross oceans and still play his best on different surfaces without having the time to adapt to them, instead of everyone's souffre douleur.

Re: 2009 Davis Cup
I love Richie's comment, and the fact that they all jump and fly to defend Gaël. That's a real team spirit, even if one of them has hard feelings about it, he didn't say them to the press. Let's wait and see I guess.

Re: 2009 Davis Cup
They're friends sure because the guy arrives 4 days later. What ? There is a problem ? and the others no problem it's OK lol

Re: 2009 Davis Cup
Only 2 days, who cares about the basket-ball stuff for Stade 2?
I'll be annoyed if it jeopardizes his selection for the next ties - which is very possible. But we don't really know how it came to this ridiculous situation, maybe the other guys know and can understand better what happened. Or maybe it is unforgivable indeed. But I still give him the benefit of the doubt. :fangirl: :p As for the rest, Gaël is used to a lot of drama and regularly gets his share of criticism from the journos and from a good part of the French tennis fans, I'm not too worried because of that, I think he gets over it. |

Re: 2009 Davis Cup
All the articles stress he seems fine and really cool atm, I think he will able to deal with it, don't worry.
Everybody says he's the one who will be kicked out of the team today, of course. But he was in a good mood yesterday and swears he doesn't mind. There are two little stories in L'Equipe and Le Parisien which illustrate his mood yesterday. I posted them on GM.com: http://www.gaelmonfils.com/forum/vie...9&p=2511#p2511 He jokes that he would also be able to answer the questions of the journalists in Czech - a hint at his story with Cibulkova last year. And in the other one, a journalist asked him after his training session who he would pick if he was the captain. Gaël: "And you, who would you choose?" The journalist: "I would leave you out of the team." Gaël: "So if we lose, I hope you won't be the first one to write in your paper the line-up was wrong and I should have been on the team. 1-0 for me!" And he picks up his bag and leaves, beaming all over his face. |
Re: 2009 Davis Cup
