Antonio Veic cheering thread
I'm surprised that, until now, no one had started a cheering thread for Antonio. He's from the island of Losinj, plays right-handed and recently turned 20 years old (born in February 1988). He had a fairly unremarkable junior career but seems to be coming into his own now that he's on the pro tour. He has been moving up nicely in the rankings:
End of 2005: Unranked End of 2006: 850 End of 2007: 455 This week--April 21, 2008--he reached a new career-high ranking of 403. Also, he's playing the $15K in Italy this week and has reached the SF. That means he'll break into the top 400, with a new career-high ranking somewhere in the 380s at least. Let's wish Antonio best of luck on the pro tour! |

Re: Antonio Veic cheering thread
Excellent result for Antonio. This is his second Futures final in a row. He'll move to around 370 if he loses in the final and to around 350 if he wins.
Good luck, Antonio! |
Re: Antonio Veic cheering thread
Antonio won the tournament! He beat Vagnozzi, the 6th seed. He won the first set 6-2, then wasted six(!) set points and lost the second set 6-7(4) but recovered to win the third 6-3.
Antonio is now 9-1 in his last ten matches. He will reach a new career-high ranking of around 350. Just last week, he was ranked 449 so that'll be a jump of around 100 places in just two tournaments! He seems destined for very good things. Could Veic become the newest Croatian tennis star? Stay tuned... |

Re: Antonio Veic cheering thread
Antonio has beaten Kavčić in the first round of this week's Zagreb challenger, 76(2) 60. That's a good win for him. Next he has a very tough second-round match against the winner of Gremelmayer (#1 seed) and Bozoljac. Still, Antonio has already picked up nine points this week which will help his ranking nicely.

Re: Antonio Veic cheering thread
Antonio beat Gremelmeyer, the top seed, 76 10 (ret). He now has 14 ranking points, which means he'll reach a new career-high ranking of around 320 next week. He's moving up the rankings very quickly!!!

I finally saw him play against Riba. Doesn't have a typical Croatian game, likes long rallies, and pretty often wins them. He still lacks experience and that's why he lost. He obviously isn't a future top10 player, but if he improves a bit more he could reach top100. |
Re: Antonio Veic cheering thread
Good win for Antonio today at Kosice challenger. In the first round, he beat Lukas Lacko (#3 seed, #164 in the world) 60 40 ret. There was probably something wrong with Lacko, since he didn't win a single game. Still, a win is a win.
In the next round, Antonio plays a qualifier, Guillermo Olaso. This is an excellent opportunity for Antonio to get to the QFs of a challenger tournament. Good luck, Antonio! |
