Re: ATP Champions Race to Shanghai 2008

Feature.

Obviously we're aware of the some of the national Race battles near the top of the standings, but there are a couple of interesting battles going on a little further down:

Croatia.

Provided he remains healthy, Ancic looks likely to take a strong lead over the rest of his countrymen, by the end of the season, but the other 3 front-runners could spend much of the season jostling positions:

Code:

01 (#24)  Ivo Karlovic (CRO)        228  (03)
02 (#25)  Marin Cilic (CRO)        227  (08)  PAR R2
03 (#34)  Mario Ancic (CRO)        180  (04)  PAR R2
04 (#53)  Ivan Ljubicic (CRO)      130  (03)  PAR R1

Italy.

This battle is more interesting, as, with certainly Starace and Volandri likely to play a handful of challengers, this season, a player who finishes Italian #1 in the ENTRY list might not top the RACE standings:

Code:

01 (#40)  Andreas Seppi (ITA)      169  (05)
02 (#42)  Simone Bolelli (ITA)    162  (03)  PAR R2
03 (#71)  Potito Starace (ITA)      84  (03)
04 (#75)  Fabio Fognini (ITA)      71  (--)
05 (#95)  Filippo Volandri (ITA)    50  (--)

Bolelli (competent on all surfaces) appears to have a strong shot at Italian Race #1, although Starace, and Seppi (also competent on all surfaces) would be expected to fight him all the way. Volandri's challenge is likely to fizzle out once the clay tournaments are out of the way, while Fognini's challenge looks to be seriously dented (seemingly only a mild threat on clay) with a shoulder injury sidelining him until at least the French Open.

USA.

Most eyes will be focused on two battles in the American list...the battle for American #1 (between Roddick and Blake), and the battle for American #3 (largely between Fish and Querrey), which takes on significance for matters such as naming a Davis Cup singles reserve. But, worryingly, while there are a number of Americans in the top 100, few of them are making any significant progress.

Code:

01 (#06)  Andy Roddick (USA)          369  (22)  PAR R2
02 (#10)  James Blake (USA)            310  (15)  PAR R2
03 (#23)  Mardy Fish (USA)            228  (08)
04 (#37)  Sam Querrey (USA)            174  (03)  PAR R2
05 (#46)  Robby Ginepri (USA)          147  (--)
06 (#79)  Wayne Odesnik (USA)          68  (--)
07 (#80)  Vincent Spadea (USA)          67  (--)
08 (#81)  Bobby Reynolds (USA)          67  (--)
09 (#93)  Jesse Levine (USA)            53  (--)
10 (#99)  John Isner (USA)              45  (--)

Thanks for the effort, at the moment the race is only a metric about short-term form, after the US Open it is very informative about year-end rankings.

No no, it's relevant to the thread in hand, so feel free to post your predictions in here. ;)

To those saying it is too early...read my first post, and come back in 6 months time.

Won't be for too long.

Lopez now up to provisional #46...not bad for someone with just 2 countable results. :silly:

Nole is opening up quite a gap now...

Re: ATP Champions Race to Shanghai 2008

My 08 Shanghai picks

(no specific order)

Federer
Nadal
Djokovic
Roddick
Murray
Tsonga

I'd be shocked if none of them made it - Plenty of contenders for the remaining 2 spots (as usual) .... I'll go out on a limb and say Nalbandian and Gonzalez (I was close to saying Baghdatis... obviously plenty of people will be confused by the omissions of Berdych, Davydenko and others but what the hell)....... Hewitt into the top 10...).
