I would like to start a thread to keep track of some upcoming juniors.
Name: Noah Rubin
Birthday: 02-21-1996 (15 years old)
Junior Ranking: 42
ATP Ranking: N/A
Description: Noah recently captured his first G1 title (Copa Del Cafe 2012, hardcourt) two weeks ago and is currently at a career high junior ranking of 42 with only 5 itf starts . His ranking will continue to rise b/c of this week's play at G1 Copa Barranquilla (clay); will play in the quarterfinal. He was a finalist at the Les Petits As a couple of years ago. Noah seems to have a solid game, but he seems kinda short though when standing next to Farren Connor at the Copa Del Cafe final (Connor is listed at 5'11"). However, Noah is two years younger so let's hope that he can add some inches.
Name: Thai-Son Kwiatkowski
Birthday: 02-13-1995 (16 years old)
Junior Ranking: 84
ATP Ranking: N/A
Description: Despite the name, he is not a Thai descendent  . He is actually 1/4 Polish and 3/4 Vietnamese (from local paper). He is close to his career high in junior ranking but the last couple of weeks had him focusing on futures qualifying (not very successful thus far). He has a nice forehand. Here is an old video of him from the local news: Link
Lederman had three mps on Rubin and could not convert, according to zoo tennis. So can Thai upset Rubin? And di foe upset papa? I say papa wins his match and Thai beats Rubin.
It's a little slow to load. And works best on google chrome or firefox. And if you have a mac instead of a pc, you have to download something, i think it's written on the page.
I just have a hard time visualizing Thai upsetting anyone late into the tournament. If it gets into a third set, I def. don't see him winning (mentally fragile).
Thai has never lost to Rubin. That might help his mental state. Rubin competes better for now, although I have seen him check out when things don t go his way. Thai is a better tennis player but sometimes that s not a guarantee for coming up with a win.
Di Feo s style is just making balls and no finishing shot. Has good hands at the net, good dubs player. Bad matchup for him against Rubin. Rubin in straights, no more than 7 games for Hugo. Rubin will have time on Hugo s ball and won t be rushed, when that happens rubin wins most of the time
Di Feo s FH a liability, rubin will feast on that.
BTW, I'm still upset about yesterday, rain . The USTA needs to do something about Spencer's game, he needs to learn how to adapt to quicker surface. His indoor results are atrocious. Send Spencer to train in New York for the winter or something, would greatly improve his doubles game as well. Thank goodness the rain came later into the week unlike at 53 Trofeo Bonfiglio where he lost badly to a local wildcard in the first round 36 16
Of all the players train at Boca, I think Stefan is the only one capable of playing well on all surfaces. Thai can only play on fast surface, Spencer only on slow outdoor or clay, Luca is well Luca (struggling).
Papa was very good on fast surfaces before he started training in Boca. He did have a breakthrough on clay this year. He could definitely use some help with dubs play which will make him a better singles player on faster surfaces where he has less time to produce his shots. Kozlov is Kozlov, so he can play on Mars. Redlicki can play better indoors and fast outdoor. His lack of movement can be exposed on clay easier, although he did well in delray. Thai and Corinteli need to step up. They are both trying to get back into playing more aggressive style quick worked for them before. There is a trend with kids out of Boca, they stop playing aggressive and attacking style and back up a few feet. It s a shame since there are very able kids going through the training there and they level off after a few years there.
It s no coincidence that Rubin, Kruger, Tiafoe, Mmoh are competing better than Boca kids. Even Paul started playing looser and better after leaving Boca. Rubin played a subpar level in Tulsa and yet won it because he out competed everyone.
Other similarities: both were or are promoted by Johnny Mac and both are small in stature and yet are way ahead of their peers. Let s just hope that the similarities end there, otherwise the great success in juniors will be the biggest accomplishment. But I think Rubin is a way too smart of a kid and has a pretty good team of people around him.
