This kid is just 17 and even though he may be far from the heights of Nadal, Monfils and Gasquet at such an age, Fognini is a real bright spot for Italian tennis.

Number 501 in the world you may think there is no big deal, but this year is his first main year and hes already won a futures event in SPain as well as being in the final of another in Italy. Now in the Olbia CHallenger event he is in the quarters beating Luzzi in round 2.

So With this result he will be in the top 500 for sure and will move up quite a few places. A few more succesful challengers and he should hopefully be recognised on the challneger tour!

DAVIS CUP ARG vs. ITA 1st RD 31.01.2014-02.02.2014; DC; Outdoor: Clay

DAVIS CUP FIRST ROUND 2014

Fognini Leads Italian Triumph

ARGENTINA 1, ITALY 3

Patinodromo Municipal “Adalberto Lugea”, Mar del Plata, Argentina

Italy secured its place in the World Group quarter-finals for a second consecutive year after Fabio Fognini denied Carlos Berlocq his second win of the tie, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in three hours and 38 minutes. Fognini converted on six of 18 break point opportunities, firing 76 total winners, including 19 off his backhand wing. The Italians successfully battled back from an early day one deficit after Berlocq snatched the opening rubber on Friday. The win prevents Argentina from reaching the quarters for the first time since 2001.

Italy will host Great Britain in the quarter-finals, held 4-6 April.
