Re: Grigor Dimitrov

Too bad our dream ended so early, but Serra is a tricky player who has the weapons of an all-arounder with good attacking game when needed and a strong serve. Surely I thought Grigor has chances before the game as Serra didn't have impressive indoors results this season, but obviously he has enough weapons to disarm our boy. Grigor needs to work on the second serve and he should be fine and after all time is on his side. I saw a lot of similar performances this week from better players (Ferrero showed similar stats on second serve and return against Melzer and Chardy was as bad against Kunitsyn) who suddenly lacked good shots so nothing to worry about. Waiting for next week now :wavey:

I think it is just too early for him to play top 100 players. I think he should be playing challengers not masters series qualies for now and he should also secure his #1 junior ranking. That'd be great if he could finish the year as #1 in the U18 ITF and be around 350 in the ATP ranking... :)

Re: Grigor Dimitrov

Undoubtedly Grigor needs more practice on the Futures and Challengers level as he is still too young and inexperienced to compete on the main tour (not to mention the Masters Series). Still we in Bulgaria have been away from top mens tennis for so long that we need to see some local player involved in the top events. However, Grigor is No 1 Junior and he gets invited here and there and he obviously has good management so it all gives me hopes for his good development. The people around him know the routine and they will give him the needed. :worship:
Going back to his Madrid performance - as I read yesterday the surface there is a bit tricky especially for inexperienced players. It is fast and favours the big serves (hence the good stats on first serve), but the ball bounces awkwardly and moves fast especially if you give it some top spin. Therefore returns are tricky to manage if you are making your first appearance in Madrid. Serra is very experienced and he knew how to handle the returns while Grigor did not. Anyway, good luck to him for the rest of the season and in general! :)

Re: Grigor Dimitrov

Time for Basel now - Grigor meets Jiri Vanek in the first qualifying round and if he beats him a weaker opponent awaits:

http://www.atptennis.com/1/posting/2008/328/qs.pdf

Vanek is no slouch indoors as he played qualification for Moscow and managed to beat three opponents before going out to Ginepri in the first main draw round. Apart from that Vanek is generally a clay courter, but has a good serve.
As I see it now there are three qualifying rounds so it will be really hard for Grigor, but good luck anyway!

Re: Grigor Dimitrov

It was such a intense match. I was following it to through the livescore but my heart was going to explode on the last games. His next opponent is Julian Reister from Germany not Koubek or Bastl. Good Luck tommorow. Bulgaria is with you. :worship:

Re: Grigor Dimitrov

The match just killed me. I was more emotional than whenever I placed a bet on anything. Grigor had match point at 4-5 on Vanek's serve and then another one on his own serve at 6-5 in the TB, but could not finish it. Finally he closed it 8-6 and got the deserved first (of many I hope) win on the main tour. His second serve was more efficient than in Madrid as he got 57% points won behind it and he kept his cool saving 10 BPs.

Reister is No 272 in the world so he is weaker on paper than Vanek. He plays mostly on clay, but has a very good and powerful first serve. He always plays in Basel and failed to qualify in 2005, but did it in 2006 and 2007 beating the likes of Koubek, Navarro, Karanusic. Overall a beatable opponent so I hope Grigor will do well. Good luck!

Re: Grigor Dimitrov

So I went back to see the 3rd set of Dimitrov vs Vanek. Nice play from Dimitrov, the crowd was supporting him and they got their winner. Vanek should have clinched it actually with his experience, but well..he's a claycourter after all :p Dimitrov was the deserved winner and generally I prefer players who advance to the net from time to time....

Re: Grigor Dimitrov

Too bad Grigor lost his game. I suppose it was too much effort yesterday and too much excitement from the maiden ATP Tour win. He was very much competitive throughout the first set from what I saw on the livescore, but he missed a lot of chances and managed to convert just one of six BPs while conceding almost all BPs faced. His first serve was the other trouble as he could not take full advantage of it - and he has a good first serve in general.
However - we got the first win to cheer and now we hope for better performances in Germany! :)

Re: Grigor Dimitrov

can someone translate that

Der bulgarische Jung-Star Grigor Dimitrov erhält eine Wild Card für das Hauptfeld des ATP-Turniers LAMBERTZ OPEN BY STAWAG (25. Oktober bis zum 2. November 2008).

Re: Grigor Dimitrov

More or less the article states Grigor's success on the junior circuit and the Futures tour this year and the fact that he trained in the Agassi academy before US Open. The tournament in Aachen generally is good for upcoming stars as Djokovic, Davydenko and Del Porto played here and the organizing staff is excited about young players starting their career among the men in Aachen so they welcome Grigor.

I wonder whether any TV or live streaming will broadcast this Challenger?
