Australian Open - Ferrer rues missed chances

David Ferrer rued letting Andy Murray off the ropes in the Australian Open semi-final but exited his 33rd consecutive Grand Slam tournament satisfied he had done his best against a "very, very great player."

The 28-year-old Spaniard was one point away from taking a two-set lead over the Briton in an electric atmosphere at Rod Laver Arena, but Murray slammed the door shut with a huge serve before marching to the final with a 4-6 7-6(2) 6-1 7-6(2) victory.

"I had my chance in the set point in the second set, but in the important moments he served really well," said Ferrer, who scrambled hard all night and produced some sensational tennis before succumbing when Murray ratcheted up the pressure.

"I play little bit short sometimes in the start of the tiebreak. And really the key was the serve.

"Andy in important moments served better than me. So I can't do nothing more. I fight a lot. I tried my best game all the time, but Andy's a very, very great player."

Having outpointed one of the game's best counter-punchers for large stretches of the match, the seventh-seeded Spaniard lost his cool after the third set, kicking over a sponsor's sign in frustration after failing to break Murray's serve.

The Spaniard's fourth-set fightback from a break down set a packed Rod Laver Arena alight, but ended with a second tiebreak collapse to leave his record 74-80 in the seven-point deciders.

However, Ferrer said he was still hungry to mix it with the game's best players despite losing a second grand slam semi-final - his other one coming at the 2007 US Open.

"I am seven in the world because I play well before and now, no?" he said. "You know, Rafael (Nadal) is number one in the world because he is the best. Federer is two because he is the second best. Me, I am the seventh. Next week six."

I will be doing something else on Sunday. I don't like either Murray or Djokovic. I feel as though I jinxed poor David. When I first turned on the television, he had won the first set. I should have quit when I was ahead. Teaches me to get up at 3 a.m. to watch a tennis match! I told myself I'd never get up that early to watch any match again after the disaster in Rome when Juan Carlos Ferrero was beaten by Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. When will I ever learn? I'm hating life and myself today. If I can catch up on my sleep, maybe I'll feel better.

EDDA, YOU'RE AN IDIOT!

Yep, that was what I was getting at in my last post. The more he tangles with these top guys the more comfortable he'll feel. He doesn't exactly have a lot of experience being in the slam semi-finals.....yet. So this match is just a means to an end. That's how I look at it and now I can sit down and root for Djoko to take out Murray. Djoko seems to have finally gotten his act together mentally while Murray is still battling with his inner demons.

Hoping for Li Na to make history.

David's recently posted on his site from the airport before his 30 hour journey home to thank everyone for their support... He's also been quoted in Spanish as saying he has nothing to reproach himself for. Indeed he hasn't and I'm glad to see that he said that, as that's the attitude he needs to take forward. :D

And yes, I really believe his game has stepped up a level - he can really take it to Rafa, Roger, Djoko etc IF he believes it also. (Yes ariel - we know he can squash Soddy OK!! Funnily enough, Melzer seems more of a problem )

LOL! What prompted the Serbs to shave their heads anyway?

David is looking good and playing well! I was so excited that David is now world ranked number 6! Keep going, David. I'd love to see my two favorite Spaniards in the top 5. (What is my fascination for Spanish guys when I'm not even Spanish?)

This is a tough draw for David. He's possibly got Raonic, Tipsarevic, Roddick, and then Djokovic. But Haase might take out Roddick. Hewitt is always a wild card but doesn't have the stamina anymore to deal with David. But let's face it, his chances against Djoko...... Anything can happen but......

Of all the top four to get, this is the worst matchup although Fed wouldn't be cakewalk either. Here's to hoping.
