"Roddick moves up rankings despite not playing" - Idiotic article!

Seriously, they pay people to write this crap?

Want to know when your rankings system needs to be revamped? When a guy that hasn't played a competitive match in six months moves up in the rankings despite not playing the game he's improving his number in.

A tweet from Tennis Stats pointed out that Andy Roddick, the man that stepped away after losing to Juan Martin del Potro in the 2012 US Open, remarkably moved from 42nd to 40th in the world despite spending most of his time this month at Pebble Beach playing golf, not tennis.

How in the world did this happen? Well, it's complicated in the sense that the ATP rankings are insane and make no sense. Basically the rankings are a review of the past 52 weeks of play, so Roddick, who won twice before Wimbledon last season, is riding that success in the rankings despite not playing anymore, and two guys ahead of him (Viktor Troicki and Nikolay Davydenko) dropped down due to poor play.

It's so ridiculous that even Roddick retweeted the line from Tennis Stats, and no doubt got a good chuckle out of it as he continued to not play competitive tennis, and with the drought that is men's American tennis, maybe Roddick is still their best hope to break into the top 10 if people continue to fall early in tournaments.
:stupid:

Although it's a stupid article, I DO think that the ATP needs to actively remove players from the rankings once they've expressed no desire to play anymore. I get why they don't remove players (because they don't "add" players), but they need to. It just makes more sense, IMO.

This I agree with.. if a player has clearly expressed that he has retired, needs to be taken from rankings, it is unfair they just hog a spot for no reason. Roddick is retired, why just keep him there without reason, ATP should let a player sign a waiver or something saying he is retired, so he can be removed from active ranking list.

Stupid article. No matter what ranking system you have there would still be points dropping off players ranking tables while retired players who are still on the rankings wouldn't lose any, the only way to solve this would be just to delete retired players from the rankings which they did do at Ljubicic request, guess Roddick wanted to stay.

This artice is bang on, there is nothing dumb about it, Roddick shouldn't even be in the rankings anymore, he's retired for goodness sake, that's what's stupid here, there shouldn't even be an article about this.

What do you mean? You wanted Roddick stricken on account of presently non-extistent rules. I wondered how you would introduce a rule to allow for striking him without waiting for his written request. I notice you have yet to launch a realistic alternative. If you find that is too hard, perhaps you'll understand better why the rules are as they are today.
You are one who clearly does not listen to logic or reason in this case, so it's over.

I still don't get this.

If it is true, it is ridiculous.

A player should just have to notify the ATP when he retires. It is a job, right? This is what people do with jobs? No need to read every interview. Just submit a piece of paper.

He is taking opportunities away from other players who need opportunities.

How so? He's not taking anyone's place in any draws...

He can change his mind, it happened in other sport. Hockey goalie Hasek announced retirement like 3 times and everytime got back. Maybe Andy will visit Vegas, gamble a bit and will be forced to make some more money :)

Fedfan and Roddick fan care more about real life's problems, but they're in this thread? Too bad no one cares what fake amusement they feel.

Come back, Andeeee... Djoker's waitin' for you.

Roddick is going to have a go at Wimbledon 2014. My sources tell me. He wants to reach the second round.

LOL, it is like other jobs, it's not like when you say i resign from the job, that's it, you need to file proper paperworks. People forget it's a job as well. And i don't get the he is taking opportunities for other players he not taking anyone's spot in the entry lists.

I'm surprised you make a big deal of it, in the majority of the sports in the world it would be extremely bizarre and random for a retired player to gain ranking status after leaving the sport....

it's interesting for sure. granted if you're a tennis fan it's just common sense, but in many sports if you retire you are entirely taken off the ranking and/or it is impossible for you to move up unless you are actively preforming in games

it is fascinating that this can occur in tennis

I would bet that it's possible in every single sport that keep official results based rankings as long as the player hasn't gotten removed from the official rankings list via proper channels.
