Argentina versus England '98. ;) The joy in having won then was just undescribable. It was suuuch a tense match. (I was abroad when '86 happened.)
Also when Argentina won the gold in basketball. :D

It really, really sucks to lose in the world cup though. I was depressed for a week after the last WC. Not as much as my older brother though, he locked himself in the car with a bottle of liquor and cried himself to sleep listening to opera. True story.

Ok so maybe he wasn't doped.

But he never scored that goal. It was all staged by NASA.

I have a question for you.

Is it true that the NI football team is for all intents and purposes a protestant loyalist team? I heard of a NI catholic player who opted to play for the south and said catholics aren't comfortable playing for the north, and I wonder if this is widespread and whether there are Catholic players in the NI team.

I really don't know, not having lived there for 46 years. Something I would never think about, but I would not be surprised if that was the case some years ago.I would have hoped it no longer matters.

As for opting to play for the south, I think that any NI player who could get on the Irish team would jump at the chance. There would be a much better opportunity to get into a major competition. I think somebody got death threats a short while ago for opting for the south, but have no idea what religion he practiced.

There is not much on the internet, but I read one quote that said Catholics have always played for NI, the problem was the supporters who were almost exclusively Protestant. But there seems to have been major progress there, with NI fans now being recognized as among the best in Europe.
You may not be aware that in NI Catholics are much more interested in Gaelic games than in football. And I am sure it has changed now, but when I lived in NI, anyone who played Gaelic games was forbidden to attend non-Gaelic sports events, such as football matches. So it is not surprising that until recently, NI football fans were almost exclusively Protestant. And hardly surprising that NI Catholics that were not influenced by the Gaelic Associations chose to support the Irish Republic team.

Ideally, of course, there would be one Irish team, as in rugby, where religion has never been a factor. But a possible merger of the Irish and Northern Irish Fooball Associations into one body, is way, way over the horizon.

This has been mentioned before, but Denmark winning the 1992 Euro is simply an astonishing story.

Again, they got in on short notice due to Yugoslavia being banned because of the war, after failing to qualify in the first place. Most players were already on holidays, thinking about nothing but the beach.

As it turned out, they ended up winning the tournament after beating the reigning European champions (Netherlands), the previous champions (France) and the reigning World Champions (Germany).

What a story that was.

Unforgettable moment that one. Possibly the two best national sides at penalties: Germany is 5-1 and Czech(oslovakia) is 3-0 (only Saudia Arabia has a better record at 4-0, but you know...).

It remains the world record 17 years on. Unbelivable.

He actually jumped 18.43m at one meet, but the wind was too fast for world record conditions.

great catch, the race concluded with the record gap between the 1st and 2nd; another 2 races with such an extreme gap are the 1995 Adelaide (Ive already mentioned it) and again Stewart won the 1969 Spanish GP with a big gap. On both occasions the 2nd came 2 laps after the 1st
Yes, this seemed incredible to me along with the epic dijon duel and Senna's classic Brazil victory with only one gear. Old f1 looks incredible.

Holy shit. So Europe won?

When I read your comments I thought you meant it ironically, and then I checked the paper... not bad. Not bad at all.

Outside of tennis:

Champions League Final 2005 - Used to love football and Liverpool used to be my faves, matches really don't get much better than that. No idea how Liverpool won that.

Canadian GP 2011 - Most entertaining race of all time. :worship: I mean there's no logic to it, taking out Hamilton, taking out Alonso, getting a shitload of penalties, getting a puncture and with something like 20 laps remaining being in last place to overtake Vettel on the last lap is fucking unreal, in interchangeable conditions no one even comes close to Jenson. :worship:

Button in Canada was boss no doubt. Kimi R at Japan in 2005 was pretty special also.
