Tommy Haas Joins James Blake for 2007 Delray Beach ITC
U.S. Open quarterfinalists Tommy Haas and James Blake, a pair of Florida residents who both reside among the top 15 ATP players in the world, will be among the stars to watch in the 2007 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships at the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center. Last month the German-born Haas joined Blake in committing to play in the January 27-February 4 tournament, which is celebrating its 15th year.

Ticket packages for the 32-player ATP event, the first of 2007 in the U.S, are on sale and can be purchased by calling the Delray Beach ITC box office at 561-330-6000, on-line at www.YellowTennisBall.com or through Ticketmaster.

Haas defeated 2005 champion Xavier Malisse 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5) last February to win the first of his three ATP titles this season. A 43-17 record has given him the fifth Top 20 finish of his career, and a continued remarkable comeback from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the 2003 season.

“I’m very much looking forward to returning to Delray Beach,” said Haas, who has trained fulltime at the Bollettieri Academy in Bradenton since he was 13 years old. “In a lot of ways winning Delray Beach was key to the successes I’ve enjoyed in 2006.”

Blake, who beat No. 3 Ivan Ljubicic in the Bangkok final this month for his fourth ATP title of 2006, is 50-21 and ranked No. 6 in this season’s ATP Champions Race. He is in good position to secure his first-ever berth in the Tennis Master’s Cup that features year-end competition between the top eight players in the world.

With Haas’ ranking at No. 14, tournament director Mark Baron has a draw that could include a pair of world Top 10 players—a first for Delray Beach.
“With James and Tommy already committed to returning and potentially both being in the Top 10, we’re looking forward to what could be our best draw ever,” said Baron. “That possibility has us very excited as we continue to build on the successes of our last tournament.”

I don't have facebook account, but I've read somewhere that during his procedure for the US citizenship he ''erased'' his real name Thomas, so it's only Tommy instead.

On the other hand, I'm sure we all agree that we became Tommy fans because of his style of play, not because his image or anything else on that matter.Instead I would have only supported Djokovic,Tipsy,Troicki but that just is not going to happen :p:p:p
But,I would be deeply disappointed if he chooses to play for the USA because to me he's simply German!
No offense to any American but trust me I would feel just the same way as if I was American.

So,all these things aside, why do we need to keep on supporting him?
I'm sure because of Tommy's style of play, his character, his personality etc... and above all he's TOMMY HAAS!

I suspect that the ATP's posting the US flag next to Haas' name was done by a wishful thinking American! :) Seriously, someone on the staff probably heard about his getting US citizenship and may have mistakenly concluded that he gave up German citizenship. Until Tommy talks about it, I'm not going to put too much stock in it. But as others said earlier, we would all welcome him. I don't agree that everyone here thinks of him as American--many respect that he's German, but we're happy to have him here as long as he wants to be. And he does get a lot of support wherever he plays in the US, but so do players like Federer and Nadal, who are adored.

OMG, I'm so fucking sick of all this debate over Tommy's nationality. GET OVER IT! He's German-American. Which means he's still German. He was born a German, he always will be German. Does it really matter what country he plays for, the one he was born in or the one he's lived in for two-thirds of his life and where he trained to become one of the best tennis players in the world? If all you really care about are the letters or the flag after his name then go jump on fucking Kohlschrieber's bandwagon. I, for one, will continue to support Hasi whether he's German, American, Chinese, Mexican, or Kenyan because the only thing that matters to me is the kind of person he is and the sheer brilliance he brings to the sport. And to the person who posted to Tommy on his website that he's disappointed in him and will find it hard to cheer for him as an American, who needs fans like you anyway?

in Tommy's new column there's nothing about him playing for the USA. So I'm almost sure, it was ''all big deal'' for nothing.

I guess we can keep those things aside and look forward to his recovery and his return to the court. ;)

There are a few lines about it in the last issue of the German "tennis magazin", it doesn't bring much, but I found funny that even his own manager has no clue whatsoever! Tommy is just not joinable, so they asked his manager who first was very annoyed and said it's a poor move of the ATP. But the ATP says they changed it as per Tommy's request. His manager: "I can't believe this." And then he says that anyhow, the issue isn't that important since Tommy loves both countries.

Eve you could never be mistaken for a stalker! Or may be more to the point I bet a lot of guys would love to be stalked by you :p Well the ATP site says Tommy plays for the U.S. Personally I find this whole flag thing on the funny/confusing side since Tommy is completely off the Tour and can't play for any country at all  I'll always back Tommy no matter what country he will be playing for, but honestly I just can't see the point in him switching flags this late in his career

Hey guys! During the BMW Open coverage in Munich today, the Sport1 commentator Elmar Paulke (also Tommy's brother-in-law) has mentioned that Tommy will play for the USA. Haas requested the ATP + ITF to change his nationality to the U.S. It was not a decision of the ATP to change it. Paulke said something like Tommy's dream is to play the US Open as an American, for all the US fans who supported him there over the years.

I think you'll be just fine ;) Sure it's hard to think anything on this subject ,without him playing matches. But as soon as he steps in as Tommy Haas, it's whole new thing. I found his decision to change the country difficult as well, but I'm pretty sure I'll follow him with the same emotion like in past years.
Did his decision hurt me?-yes,but what the hell,he knows the best. and we are still waiting his final word on this subject.

ppl.. why cry over ones country?!?!? i really dont understand it. its freakng Tommy Haas, no matter his country its tommy!!!! I see Tommy on court agains for example Roger, not some German guy against a Swiss. Get over it guys and try to focus on his come-back in stead of :sobbing: over his country....

Because I care about tennis in my country. Everytime Haas won big matches in the past, tennis was in focus of the media here. For example when Haas reached the semis of Wimbledon last year, suddenly three quarters of my school grade (of which maybe 5% had seriously something to do with tennis and we were 150 students!) talked to me about Haas' victory and began to ask me questions on tennis and where to watch his semi final on the internet (!!). The public in Germany talked about tennis, followed his semi-final and not only Eurosport, you know what I mean?
Now the time that a German player can land a big win is definitely over because Haas is now an American. You cannot expect Kohlschreiber, Petzschner or anyone else to go far at a Grand Slam tournament in close future. So in the next time, nobody will care about tennis in Germany. And that's what makes me very sad because I see the downfall esepcially of the small tennis clubs here in my country (e.g. my club, 10 years ago we had 250 members, no we are down to 171).

It's too bad that he doesn't say anything on his hp so far. Well, I could accept Tommy's decision because I like the tennis player first of all. Without Tommy Haas, tennis is not the same for me. And in my opinion, he won't play Davis Cup anymore, neither for Germany nor the United States.

i agree on that, but he must have his own reasons to not talk about it?
i wish he also wouldve mentioned anything about his healing and some expectations ..

#869 ·
Yay, hope it goes according to plan.

BTW, nice flag sig Eve

#871 ·
Ok I understand that it might feel bad, but do you think the media will stop writing about haas now that he plays as USA?? I dont think so.. They also wrote about him when he lived in USA, tommy haas = tommy haas, he might play with usa flag, he's still a born german. And it's not like he's playing another 5 years, so there will always be an end to one's career and new kids have to show their qualities.

I can imagine this sucks, but i cant understand you cant support Haas the same way you did, it sounds like you support him because he's the best german. Which i wont believe. So just wait and see what happens, maybe the media continue writing about him, you never know

tnx ;)

Thanks el tennista for explaining where you're coming from. It's great that you love tennis and want the sport to flourish in your country, but insulting Tommy because of a personal decision he may (or may not) have made doesn't accomplish anything.

I totally agree with Eve that it doesn't really matter what country a person comes from. For me personally, more often than not I find myself rooting against the US players (don't tell anyone I said that! ;)). If people are passionate about tennis they will be passionate regardless of player nationality.

And as Tommy fans we need to stand by our guy and support his choices! :)

#873 ·
Ah Ha--I have found another American that more often than not roots against The US players--so do I :p And as for Tommy I'm his fan no matter whose flag he plays under ;) But I have to admit I still don't understand why he has made this decision so late in his career especially since he has lived in the US for years and years

#875 ·
I doubt theres a reason...same as why even with all his talent, he has somehow managed to lose against countless mugs.

#876 ·
Are you supposed to be a Fan of Tommy's? And aren't you forgetting things like 3 right shoulder surgeries, a broken ankle, many illnesses, hip surgery, the fact that he was off Tour when he was healthy due to his parents being seriously injuried in an accident? And also aren't you forgetting that Tommy was once ranked #2 in the World? I'm glad all of Tommy's fans aren't like you

#880 ·
I have one question considering protected ranking. PR will be based on Tommy's average ranking during the first three months of his injury. So how will that function? Can he be seeded at tours? USO?

#881 ·
I don't think it's used for seeding (though I'm not 100%), just for entry

#882 ·
ATP site says:
The Entry Protection shall be a position in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, as determined by the player's average South African Airways ATP Rankings position during the first three months of his injury. The Entry Protection shall be for entry into the main draw or qualifying competition or for special exempt consideration. The Entry Protection shall not be used for seeding purposes, Lucky Loser consideration or for entry into the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
So it's only entering, not the seeded place itself

#886 ·
:awww: Tommy will be daddy, how sweet. Congrats to the happy couple

Tommy shouldn't be having sex during his injury breaks. No wonder hes so injury prone. Highly irresponsible if you ask me.
