Just an awful loss for jerzy. This novikov guy doesnt even have a win over a top 500 player this year

jerzy came back from 1-6 down in the tiebreak to 6-6 then lost it 8-6. Then he gets ahead 3-1 in the 4th set and loses the last 5 games hardly winning points in the process

I've seen a lot of ridiculous losses over the years on Grand Slams, but this one takes the cake. How can a Top 100 player lose to someone who is ranked 1098, who can't buy a win in a futures tournament and who was never a great junior (just #30 back in early 2011) is beyond me.

It had to be some Polish headcase to accomplish such "achievement"!

This win is big for Novikov and will give him confidence, however this confidence will go to hell when Benneteau or Rochus crushes him like a bug in the next round. Two experienced baseliners with good variety are exactly the kind of player someone like Novikov can't do nothing against at this point.

at 18 years old the kid was not even ranked inside the top 1000 and didnt have a top 500 win before this

i really dont think he's anything special

this just seems like a home town kid getting fired up by playing at home and jerzy probably helped out too

Re: US Open R1: (WC)Novikov def. Janowicz 6-2 7-6(6) 3-6 6-3

still, he's good enough on the surface to beat someone who's not top 1000 especially in a best of 5 match

The difference is that Sock was reaching QF's in challengers prior to the US Open with wins over solid journeymen like Phau or De Voest. Plus he was a good junior and won the Junior US Open in 2010.

Novikov didn't do anything close to Sock was doing last year.

Maybe college did him wonders. Great win for Dennis even if Janowicz didn't play well. Good luck to him in the next round, but I think his journey will end there.
