Re: The Everything Davis Cup Thread (News, Articles, Live Scores)

We draw Czech Republic at home in the first round, with USA/Switzerland as our possible QF opponents.
Not a disaster, at least Berdych is beatable, when he shows up.

Still don't think we could make it past the QF without Thanasi playing good doubles and Nick and Bernie injury free and very high on confidence. I don't think those three things have ever coincided, but let's cross fingers and toes

But I'd be glad to be surprised).

The fundamental problems seem to me to be:

1. Injury/erraticness - both Bernie and esp Nick randomly don't fire/can't play etc.
2. Doubles - Peers needs someone to play with.
3. Clay - Bernie. Need I say any more?

Bottom line is that until we have a good second doubles player who can also play singles at a high level, we won't be going anywhere. All of which adds up to, come back Kokk we need you!
I went to the match today, great to see Groth's serve live, and he certainly hit some great shots, but he wasted too many returns and he's overall to erratic. He's awful on the big points, I don't think he made a first serve over the two tiebreaks at all. Peers could have played a lot better but he was solid enough and served well throughout, volleyed well too. He wastes too many returns on big points - straight in the bottom of the net.

Anyway, we'll see what the WG throws at us this year. We haven't had great draws, although nothing too hard (this playoff could've been much tougher)

No Klizan for Slovakia.

Nick and Bernie are set to play singles, Groth and Peers in doubles. So obviously Lleyton has confidence in Nick's fitness (or he's really underestimating Martin and Kovalik who could well beat Groth).

I couldn't find time on other days but got tickets for Saturday. Hopefully we get the win that day.

I am also surprised that Nick and Bernard have both shown up to Sydney. Unfortunately for John, I think he will miss out on a spot in the team once again.

Re: The Everything Davis Cup Thread (News, Articles, Live Scores)

I think it is better to let Kyrgios rest and deal with his own issues, and reward Millman for his great form since the Olympics. It is definitely Millmans time, and we need to build depth in our Davis Cup team especially considering Kyrgios and Tomic are known to go hot and cold on Davis Cup.

We should be favourites whatever team they lay down.

I have tickets to the tie.

Does anyone truly believe that Nick is going to be in a fit condition to play best of five here?! And I highly doubt he's going to want to race the clock and try and be ready, if his dismissive attitude in press in New York when someone asked him is any guide...

The time has surely come for Millman's debut in DC competition. You could make a very valid claim that he is the most in-form Aussie player at the moment, and we know he will give it his absolute all on court. I guess what counts against him is that he rarely plays doubles at any level and the consequent lack of flexibility.

But as it currently stands, it's very hard to see anything other than Tomic/Millman/Peers/Groth with Ducks as the orange boy...
Agree Kyrgios probably isn't up for it (and you probably don't want him anyway, too erratic); Tomic not much better though does usually come good for DC, so him and Millman for the singles look the obvious choice.

Totally agree on Millman - some very strong performances indeed of late so hard to go past (not that this will necessarily stop Lleyton).

Not sure what you do if Tomic can't play - inclusion of Groth and Duckworth though strikes me as a bit odd. I suppose Duckworth almost justified given his USO performance, but would have preferred Thompson all the same myself - more longer run potential and more consistent. But I suppose he and Peers are a possible doubles combo.

Personally I would have gone for Gooch over Groth, or possibly Gooch and Groth over Peers. Peers is the obvious pick if there is someone who can play well with him, but Groth surely isn't really a singles option at the moment in reality, and Groth-Peers hasn't proved to be a great combo. Gooch by contrast is doing extremely well a USO, he and Sa currently at 19 in the race. And he and Gooch are a proven combo...

Re: The Everything Davis Cup Thread (News, Articles, Live Scores)

We draw Slovakia at home for the playoffs.

Klizan their only player in the top 100, gives us a reasonable chance.

Hopefully all our boys (minus Hewitt, for goodness sake) make the, selves available.
