Re: Davis Cup 2010: France against Germany

I completely agree with Karine. I believe Richard and Forget talked about this beforehand, I can't see him discovering his selection in the breaking news on l'équipe.fr like we all did. He accepted, clearly thinking it was a good idea, otherwise we would have never heard about it. Can you imagine Forget threatening to tell to l'équipe Richard didn't want to go, and therefore Richard accepted in fear of seeing it all over the news ? It's a bit overdramatic.

So Richard wants to be there, period. I'm sure he knows better than any of us what is good for him. So what, if he wants to spend a week with his two best friends on tour, enjoying the DC atmosphere. All of them, save for Tsonga, were 5th men at some point, I can't remember the last time it happened to Richard, or if it ever did. Being a part of this group also means being there for the others, like Gaël in Romania, like Bennet in Holland  Criticizing Forget's decision there is criticizing Richard's.

That said, the problem for me comes more from the fact that the situation looks a lot like last year, except that Forget made all a fuss about Gaël playing the week before in South America. In the end, they blamed more Gaël's choice than Gilles' disastrous performance for our loss. And now, the same happens with Richard, even though Forget asked Gaël not to go to Acapulco and he didn't, but Forget still selects Gasquet. Forget is very lucky that Gaël and Richard are such good friends, if it had been anyone else in that situation -say, PHM for example, or Mika, I don't think they're super close-, Gaël would have probably been very bitter about this, and understandably so.

If Forget is trying to create a team spirit, he's not doing it well. The more I see it, the more I think that if we win this damn cup one day, it won't be thanks to him, but thanks to the strong friendship between the players which will safely take them through Forget's little unvoluntary dramas.

At least, take comfort in the fact that if the German beat us, no one will blame Richard for once

Well I am not sure, the journalists can still complain that Richard did not support enough the players, blabla like in US two years ago.
So Marion, please take the phone of Richard before the matches :p

Wow, I'm really shocked about Richard being picked. Forget never ceases to amaze me. Although I would absolutely love to see Richard win a DC match right now, I hope he does not have to play. Maybe being with his friends for a few days will be good for him. They do seem to get along very well. Good luck France! Here's hoping we'll be able to see Richard and his friends win the DC someday, soon I hope!

Re: Davis Cup 2010: France against Germany

Normally I am criticised for finding excuses.
Haha, everything changes

Unfortunately I can imagine everything with Forget. / Did Richard have a choice? The whole of France would be over him if he had refused.

He had all the reasons in the world to refuse (bad shape, in reconstruction, in South America and needing to be in Indian Wells next, other guys ready to go in his place, his presence not beeing as necessary as it used to be a few years ago.) It has nothing to do with what happened against the USA. If he had refused, I absolutely don't see why Forget would have told that to the press, and even if he had, no one would have blamed Richard, everyone recognises that he's not anymore the saviour of France and that there are a lot of other guys there now. He's there because he wants to, that seems obvious to me.

Do you really think that fear/blackmail relationship between Forget and Richie that you're describing is accurate, honestly ? Sorry, that seems a bit too mafia for me. Richard is an adult, not a victim, I very much doubt his actions are dictated by fear, or else it's not a lot of trust you place in him there.

If you want to believe Richard got tricked into accepting and he wants to be everywhere in the world but in Toulon next week end, fine. We all have different opinions.

I totally agree and I think I did point that out already.
I was just reinforcing your point  It wasn't aimed at you. I think Forget is stupid and clumsy and does a lot of things wrong, I already said it a lot; and this time it's justified by what I said about creating totally unnecessary drama between Richard and Gaël (thankfully it will be killed in the egg, thanks to their relationship.)

Oh I will  I happen to know that he has the numbers of Jo and Gaël in his phone, I shall get my hands on that too
I'll give him a pair of cheerleader's pompoms while I'm at it, no one will accuse him of not supporting enough then

not pom poms, the pictures from last time he had pom poms are quite bad enough ;)

As long as he is the 5th man, or if he's the 4th man but playing a non crucial match then thats fine with me. Good practise for IW. Hardcourts are good, playing with his friends would be good and being in a positive DC experience where he plays a small part in a team win would be great.

Re: Davis Cup 2010: France against Germany

According to http://www.welovetennis.fr/coupe-davis/20447-debut-des-entrainements-ce-matin, they are practising right now. :)

Nothing of importance, just practise schedule on Monday and the schedule for the rest of the week, a kids' day on Wednesday and the draw on Thursday. BTW, I read elsewhere that the tie is sold out.

Edit: And another article http://www.varmatin.com/ra/toulon/2...uy-forget-heureux-d-etre-a-toulon-pour-gagner with a video, Forget talking and the players practising, they even show the Germans briefly. :D

Re: Davis Cup 2010: France against Germany

The suspense is killing everybody, I see. It sounds like it will be BB indeed, even though I would find Greul funnier too:
http://tennismagazin.de/tour_exklusiv/detail.php?object_id=138261&class=22&pid=1

Little gem of Hagelauer:
"Ils ont une bonne équipe de double, Greul et Kas sont des spécialistes".
(Greul's career high in doubles: 126, worst doubles player on the German team)

I don't think throwing formal dinners for groups of grown men dressed in identical attire is a good idea, they should all be required to bring dates so that the pictures are more interesting :)

Their faces at dinner

Richard is the first to be surprised by his selection ! LOL

Mika played with 6 different players in double

Re: Davis Cup 2010: France against Germany

I don't get why they picked Toulon if they don't have a better indoor stadium, it's not like Southern France badly needed to host a tennis event. I'm watching other ties on the livestream at the same time, like Switzerland-Spain, and Toulon looks really small in comparison.

Re: Davis Cup 2010: France against Germany

It looks small that's true and too much blue
Since Kohli missed the BP at 4-3 in the second set it's finished. Gael has been very focused with great period on serve, big defense but i found kohli not good like the year has started indeed.
BB will surely not resist to Jo and we should be 2-0 tonight. No problems but it was expected.

Re: Davis Cup 2010: France against Germany

Hey :D I just came back from the first day. So, what I can recall so quickly after :

About Gaël's match, from where we were it wasn't a great performance, but he did the job -I was just so anxious about him losing that I didn't pay a lot of attention to his game level. He was pushing a lot at times, not being enough aggressive in my view, and playing too much on Kohli's backhand. I was eating my nails during the tie-break. It was such a relief when he won.

The really funny part was his interaction with Gilles who was sitting on the bench during the whole match and whispering stuff to him during the change of sides -we were joking that he was listening to him a lot more than to Forget  Here is the real captain  When he wasn't giving tips to Gaël, he was sharing his view about like everything with the poor Richard whom I felt sorry for, because Gilles was speaking aaaall the time to his ear.

The cutest part was still Gaël's hug with Gilles, they cuddled for like 2 whole minutes, grinning all the time. Very sweet moment. I took a rafale of pics which I'll try to post later on, if they're good enough, as I didn't watch them yet.

Jo's match was more tennistically interesting, at least as far as I am concerned -I always find that seeing live and from up close Jo's powerful forehands when he like takes off and flies, one of my favorite experiences in tennis. He choked badly in the third, losing his break, his concentration and the tie-break, but overwise he was above his opponent. The crowd was crazier in his match than in Gaël's.

I did spend a lot of time watching the bench too, they were making us laugh a lot. Benneteau and Llodra left during the first set and didn't come back. But at some point they were sitting like Gilles, Richard, Gaël, and Gilles was chatting to Gaël from above Richard's shoulder and the poor boy was like "take me out of here" I believe Gilles doesn't shut up, never.

There were a few more funny moments, like Richard coming in carrying Gaël's bag and at the end of the match, Gaël giving his bag to Gilles who accepted it with a "ok but just because you won for the first time" look. Gilles' haircut was... explosive too, it took us a while to get used to it.

I had a lot of fun, hoping this continues tomorrow :)

(If someone wants to repost what I say here on the player's forums, I won't do it now because I don't have a lot of time available on internet since it's expensive. Not that my insight is that interesting anyway )
