Scrappy win by Lleyton, but he got it done, and in straight sets. He was up a double break in the first set but let Don back into it. Credit to Young, he played well in patches but mentally he isn't strong.

yeh the first 2 sets were kind of scrappy from Rusty, but he blitzed through the 3rd set, he should have plenty left in the tank for the rest of the tournament.

CANT wait for Rusty vs Baggy :bigclap:, rematch of their epic 2008 encounter, but i doubt it will finish at 4.34am this time though :haha:

Young should have won the first set....Hewitt was serving like 30% first serves. Some beautiful flashes of talent from Don....and some extremely awful play to go along with it. I suppose it's time to say "typical Don" at this point....he hasn't improved at all in 3 years.

He needs a coach sooooooo badly.

Hewitt was not good....but I fully expect him to go 5 sets with Baghdatis because they both seem to love doing that.

You mean 6 years. He's the same player now as he was then. He turned professional to all kinds of press in 2004 and every year since then it's been people acting like it's his first season and he's somehow just going to start turning into a good player. Not going to happen. It's not because he was pushed too early, it's because he was overrated.

Young has got no shots to beat decent players. He can only rely on opponent's mistakes at most of the time. Have to give some credit to him for the 2nd half of 1st set and 1st half of the second. Did not like that he almost gave up fighting after being broken back in 2nd

He has shots, he just makes to many unforced errors, 26-40 in the match I believe, take away the UE and Young wouldve had 1 more point won.

Young does not show good fighting spirit on the court. Lot's of negative emotion wasted on everything that doesn't go his way.

I don't know a lot about Young, but I am going to speculate that he picked up many bad habits growing up and going through the juniors. He was seen as the next "big thing" in American tennis from an early age, so I think he got an "entitlement" attitude.

Also, he has lots of "natural" talent and I think he was able to rely on that in the juniors. Now that he faces talented competition everyday, I don't think he is well equipped to think through and grind out each and every point.

In short, I really don't think he will amount to much. Especially if he doesn't find new coaching (not his parents) and leave his old mindset behind.

Too bad really. I think he could have been a very good player.

That was the first time I was able to watch Young but definitely he is really far away of having any chance to beat Hewitt. Well done Lleyton!

I also don't quite see the promise in Young. He doesn't really have elite tier weapons, or rather they're the same level as they were 3 years ago. Normally players get stronger and faster, but he sorta stayed the same.

He has good reflexes and can put some touch on the ball, but thats really not enough in this day and age, especially since he doesn't really construct points particularly well. His tennis IQ is still bad.

Further, he's petulant and lacks heart.

A lot of this is coachable, which is sad b/c he's now lost a lot of time. Also it seems he hasn't surrounded himself with good people and thats just stupid.

did anyone else watching the australian coverage think that jim courier has a MASSIVELY inflated idea of how good this kid is. he basically said he was better than the current top 200 and it was only a matter of time before he pulled himself up or words to that effect. I think the comparison was a cadillac thrown into a scrap heap.
