Re: Most aces hit in a match (more than 30)

We can update the thread about two new +40 aces in one match, both from Roland Garros

41 - Karlovic (5 sets) defeated Thompson
40 - Isner (4 sets) defeated Millman

Re: Most aces hit in a match (more than 30)

Gary Muller 3 sets 50+ aces was amazing.

Btw most of the top 10 in that list lost the match inspite of serving that many aces.

Re: Most aces hit in a match (more than 30)

Wondering, what's the record for most aces by a player in a match while his opponent scored "0"??

Re: Most aces hit in a match (more than 30)

Pasted from the opening post:

September 18th, 2009; Davis Cup semifinal (indoor clay): Ivo Karlovic, against Radek Stepanek, overcame his own record by 23 aces, but lost the match 7-6 6-7 6-7 7-6 14-16! Ivo served respectively in sets: 11, 13, 14, 12 and 28 aces. Among 78 aces only one ace came behind 2nd serve (at 2:2, 15/0 in the final set). Karlovic, only in one out of 39 service games (or 43 service games - counting tie-breaks), served 4 aces (at 3:3 in the final set; aces was separated by losing point at 30/0)

Ratio 31%: 78 aces out of 250 serves

Re: Most aces hit in a match (more than 30)

This is not a pure ace stats but might be interesting

Here is a list of the players who won 30 or more first serve points without losing one (1991-2008):
Code:
Pts. Won on 1st Serve Tournament
John Isner 39 of 39 '08 Cincinnati
Andy Ram 35 of 35 '03 Bangkok
Goran Ivanisevic 35 of 35 '96 Zagreb
Ivan Ljubicic 34 of 34 '06 Queen's
Ivan Lendl 33 of 33 '91 Memphis
Richard Krajicek 33 of 33 '97 New Haven
Alex Radulescu 32 of 32 '97 Zagreb
Dusan Vemic 32 of 32 '07 San Jose

Re: Most aces hit in a match (more than 30)

Number of aces in a match is one thing, ratio of aces/serves is another one - I guess more interesting in terms of frequency of serving aces. Generally 30 aces would be much more impressive if produced by a player in 3 sets instead of 5. Another interesting issue it is comparing number of aces & service winners combined, unfortunately service winners/unreturnable serves are extreme rarity in post-match statistics (when I make a stats-match I know how many points players got directly behind the serves...)

Joachim Johansson manufactured a "king of serve" performance in my opinion, striking 51 aces under the Melbourne sun on hardcourt, against one of the best returners in history - Andre Agassi (albeit pretty prone to receive many aces due to his inclination to play more balls off the forehand). The Swede played 149 points on his own serve in that match obtaining 34% of points thanks to aces. Below you see a percentage 'aces/serves' juxtaposition of matches with the most aces served (only Pim-Pim's match was a 4-setter, all others 5-setters):

Code:
34% - 51/149 - Joachim Johansson (Australian Open 2005 vs. Agassi)
32% - 55/169 - Ivo Karlovic (Roland Garros 2009 vs. Hewitt)
31% - 78/250 - Ivo Karlovic (Davis Cup 2009 vs. Stepanek)
27% - 49/178 - Richard Krajicek (US Open 1999 vs. Kafelnikov)
25% - 50/197 - Roger Federer (Wimbledon 2009 vs. Roddick) &
51/198 - Ivo Karlovic (Wimbledon 2005 vs. Bracciali)
23% - 113/491 - John Isner (Wimbledon 2010 vs. Mahut)
21% - 103/489 - Nicolas Mahut (Wimbledon 2010 vs. Isner)
Placement of Pim-Pim's 51 aces vs. Agassi:

He won 50% of serve-points directly behind serves:
51 aces & 24 service winners, yet he was broken thrice losing that match 7-6 6-7 6-7 4-6...
Number of aces in sets respectively: 14, 16, 9, 12
His aces on 2nd serve: 14th, 25th, 27th, 33rd, 35th & 51st

Other impressive ratios:
49% - 28/57 - Mark Philippoussis (2 sets vs. Roux in Paris '96)
47% - 16/34 - Nicolas Almagro (2 sets vs. Hajek in Valencia '07)
47% - 44/93 - Ivo Karlovic (3 sets vs. Brands in Zagreb '14)
44% - 44/98 - Mark Philippoussis (3 sets vs. B.Black in Kuala Lumpur '95)
39% - 32/82 - Ivo Karlovic (2 sets vs. Ben.Becker in Zagreb '10)
36% - 47/130 - Ivo Karlovic (4 sets vs. Tsonga at Wimbledon '09)
36% - 31/86 - Goran Ivanisevic (2 sets vs. Novak in Split '98)

Rosset had 48 aces and 30 DF (all-time record, at least until the claim about Ham Richardson's USO 1955 match can be verified) in his loss to Clement, DC 2001.
Obviously, the only 30-30 match

I don't include Challenger stats to this thread, just info about Carraz who served 50. If someone overcomes it, I will add him.
