Re: The Australian Season Thread 2009

Thanks McArthur. A secondary reason is the security concerns in Johannesburg. I would need to be accompanied by a friend or family, so I need more time to organize that - maybe next year.

It's a shame Turquoise

At least, we will be sharing the pleasure to see him play in SA on our screen

Re: The Australian Season Thread 2009

I'm very disappointed for Jo. He was the stronger player in the 1st set, 4 breakpoint opportunities which he failed to convert, and ultimately lost him the set. Credit to Verdasco who was mentally stronger on the crucial points, who served extremely well when it counted and who took full advantage of any breakpoint he had.

I was also concerned about Jo's physical condition particularly as the match wore on. The heat in Australia is obviously a big factor, but Verdasco seemed better prepared to cope with it. But, having said that, Jo has done exceptionally well considering that he has had his back problem to deal with, and at the back of his mind he must have felt afraid of aggravating it.

There will be other chances. His game is still there, and as long as he doesn't get injured, we can expect better things to come. Don't forget there's Roland Garros & Wimbledon where he will be starting on a clean slate and any results there will be a bonus.

Looking forward to seeing him play in South Africa next week. Good luck to him. (BTW, my plans to go to South Africa have not materialised on account of work commitments, but I'll be able to watch the matches on TV)

Re: The Australian Season Thread 2009

Jo seemed a little disinterested in the match to me. Something was off in his head i think, he seemed to want to play outrageous shots instead of high percentage shots when he needed to. Maybe he got nervous or struggled with the 4 set match Verdasco played amazing tho! Give him a finger & he takes an arm!

I felt like Jo wasn't on top of his game unfortunately. He played some wrong shots at the wrong time, shots with too much risk. Hopefully his back isn't bothering him too much Fernando played awesome today... Was very little he could do about it

But tbh, I think QF is a great achievement! I was afraid he might not be able to back up the expectations people had of him, but he did Now rest up and hopefully we'll see you in Rdam!

Re: The Australian Season Thread 2009

well I was expecting a tough match and wished jo to be able to play his best but he couldnt.
So many break points,13 in total but converted only 2 whereas verdasco was 4/4 , he cant waist so many opportunities.
Well he had his problem with his back, quarter final is not that bad but he really has to be healthy cause he depends so much on his serve and today he was OFF from that side.

Allez jo, see ya at rotterdam.Take some rest.

Re: The Australian Season Thread 2009

I am so disappointed for Jo, such a shame, but Verdasco is on fire at the moment and has really taken everybody by surprise. When you think he lost to Stepanek at Brisbane and then whitewashed him at AO this year! Something has definitely clicked in Verdasco's head somewhere and if Jo was feeling anxious about injuries or a little tired it would have made it so difficult for him.
It's funny because Jo really does have "star" quality. My children only ever take an interest in Jo's matches (they really don't like tennis usually, eldest daughter is coming round a little though) but they really like watching Jo. After school, my eldest has made me promise to show her some of Jo's interviews on Youtube. I think she has fallen for Jo's smile!
Rest well Jo and be healthy for your next tournie.

Re: The Australian Season Thread 2009

It all went down to the break points for me. He never played big points when it was on his serve and didn't play well on some of his opportunities!

Re: The Australian Season Thread 2009

Yeah I'm worried about his fitness, all tournament he's been playing lazy shots. There's something I don't like about his attitude now, like maybe he feels he doesn't need to be in perfect condition to win, or to fight too much. Maybe he's just still a bit disturbed by his injuries and he doesn't want to show it.

Re: The Australian Season Thread 2009

ummmmmmmmmmmmm, maybe not too bad,I think the quarterfinal is good enough. He doesn't lose too much points.and verdasco played better today.

Re: The Australian Season Thread 2009

Too bad

It was definitely doable, but he was lacking two things today :

Experience of playing these kind of players (like Robredo : massive topspin and capacity to dictate the point)

And good physical shape to make it last five sets if necessary.

Rahhhhh... But as long as he is not injured, there will be other slams to play and to win hopefully. Rome wasn't build in one day, as we say.
