Kei didn't look injured but did look dejected somewhat...
the last 2 sets was quite 1 sided, was unexpected.

and he lost the ryoma echizen san look :P
a head band instead of the usual cap...new look not working for him?

Kei

I thought it would be tough, but the scoreline was a little bit disappointing.

If the injury did factored in on that match and Kei did not use it as an excuse, then its definitely a very mature way to present yourself after a very bad loss.

As he said, his mental thinking probably got him in that match. If he would just be able to win that first set i think it will be a very different story.

Goodluck to Kei on his next tournament. Bad side we have to wait for another 3 weeks before we see him play again, good side he'll definitely fitter come San Jose.

Kei Nishikori 20-01-09
Tuesday 20 January 2009

Q. Did you feel like you were under a lot of pressure to win that game today? Did the pressure affect you?

KEI NISHIKORI: No, I didn't have any pressure 'cause, of course, he's good and he's seeded. It was a little windy. But, no, I just didn't play well today.

Q. What happened after the 5‑3 lead?

KEI NISHIKORI: I went too fast, I guess, tried to win too early. Too many unforced errors. Yeah, I had so many chance, but...

Q. Then the match quickly got away from you after the first set?

KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, I went a little down mentally I think, couldn't make any balls. No first serves. So, yeah, I couldn't play well today.

Q. Was the heat a factor?

KEI NISHIKORI: Little bit, but was okay 'cause went too quick, so...

Q. Maybe because you lost the first set you went mentally down because you thought you had to play three more sets in that heat to win the match?

KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, I thought little bit. But, still, yeah, it wasn't too bad.

Q. Do you take any positives out of this match?

KEI NISHIKORI: I had a chance in the first set, 5‑3, 5‑4. So, yeah, if I had to get the game, maybe change, hold the game.

But not many things today.

Q. Your nickname at the academy is Project 45. Do you feel there's a lot of expectation on you or that you put on yourself?

KEI NISHIKORI: No, it's one of my goal, but it's not like final goal. I counted like my ranking sometimes. No, it doesn't give me pressure or something.

Q. Like the other guys joking around with you about it?

KEI NISHIKORI: What do you mean?

Q. The nickname, is it one you take seriously or is it a bit of a joke?

KEI NISHIKORI: I don't know. Someone just made up, so... I'm not really into it. It's one of my goal.

Q. What about all this media attention from your home country, does that give you extra pressure?

KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, not many guys to get like this chance. It's good feeling.

Q. You enjoy it?

KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, I'm enjoying it.

=================================
Kei told the Japanese media the windy condition bothered him more than the heat. But he didn't make any excuse about the injury although to me he was at least underprepared because of that.

Yeah that is probably what i wanted to point out. You nailed it!
If he is not healthy going into a match definitely it is gonna be a difficult task.

I think so. The pains might have been gone or bearable, but he couldn't prepare well and was definitely playing with some uncertainty I think. He wasn't hitting as hard or freely as ususal, and hit his trademark jumping FH only once.

I noticed that once Kei is losing his play continues to downgrade, winning only 1 to 2 games a set. I think that is what he needs to do, if he is losing he needs to find a way to get back and play his best tennis. That is what Federer and other top players are doing.

Because as we see on his other matches, if he is winning or he is ahead most of the time he ended up winning his match.
Hmmm I'm not sure of that. I think for a young player Kei is pretty good at coming back from a set down, changing strategies and not allowig himself to break down mentally. That's what happened in Delray Beach SF and F, and at Queens against Nadal (though he lost in the decider).
I think what you said happens when he's physically not 100%, like when he played Sodering, and/or when he is playing against a player of similar veins, like Gasquet or Melzer, who don't rely on power and have abilities to mix up shots. And Melzer is a lefty, which makes things even more complicated. In hindsight maybe today's match up and conditions were a recipe for a bad loss for Kei. Sure he must learn to win these matches and I'm sure he will work on that.

Hope for the best in San Jose!

You're welcome Kinokino!
Yes at least he didn't have to retire and I'm sure he will be fired up in San Jose!

RafKei, I agree he has a lot to learn from this match and I'm sure he will!

Re: The " 2009 Oi Oi Down Under Season - Australian Open !!!!! Main Draw

Im really sad the Kei loss his first round match, but considering his situation (injury) and his opponent, (who is a seeded player)he can probably just let this defeat passed by and concentrate on the upcoming tournaments. Also he must learn from this defeat.

Still a good job Kei!

Re: The " 2009 Oi Oi Down Under Season - Australian Open !!!!! Main Draw

Obviously he was not 100%, he lacked preparations and the hot weather and windy condition didn't help.
Hope this loss is a blessing in disguise and he can have enough time to rest his arm and prepre for San Jose in three weeks' time.

I hate people who ask for autographs after a player lost.

Deuce after another heated exchange at the net.
Kei put both his hands on the net after the point and looked down.

And the Austrian holds.
