Re: Italian Tennis

Thought I would use this thread to update on the U16 European Championships where both Donati and Napolitano are playing.

Donati who is unseeded has absolutely blitzed his way through beating the 10th and 8th seeds easily too. Tomorrow is the 3rd seed though so expect that to be harder. Great tournament from him.

Napolitano had a tough 3 setter in the 4th round, but is also through. He is seeded 14. As I said in the Quinzi thread I believe these 3 boys have a bright future, especially Donati and Quinzi. I expect all 3 to be very close to the top 20 in the juniors next year, unless they decide to concentrate on the senior tour already, though I think they should spend next year between both juniors and seniors.

Re: Italian Tennis

Just some updates on this

Giannessi playing well at the moment, got to SF of Turin last week and beat Maxi Gonzalez (top 100 player) in straight sets this week in San Benedetto so he is rising up the rankings. Currently a set up against Matteo Viola in R2. Trevisan payed well against top 100 player Pere Riba but lost in the final set tie-break in R1.

Federico Gaio back playing this week in Italy Futures and he won his first round easy as did Fabbiano though he won in 3 sets.

In the juniors... Quinzi won his first round in Morocco G2 60 60 against a Wild Card. Good win for Mastrelia aswell in that tournament. Better results even still in a Germany G1 where Donati knocked out the top seed and Pancaldi knocked out the 2nd seed. Napolitano also through the first round against an easier opponent.

Re: Italian Tennis

First post in this thread for a long time. Just a couple positive notes on Italian tennis.

Firstly that Fognini reached the QF of RG, the first Italian tennis player to do this for a long time, since the mid 90s I think.

Secondly, Seppi winning his first ATP title and the first from an Italian player for a while aswell, since Volandri in 2007? I think.

So definitely a couple positive movements for Italian tennis. Hopefully Seppi and Fognini move on from this and into the top 30 at some point, but also some other players like Bolelli begin to hit their true potential. Also Italy need to get back into the Davis Cup Main Group.

A note for Paolo Lorenzi who has won 2 challengers in a row (Reggio Emilia and Rijeka) and will take him to a career high ranking.

Re: Italian Tennis

In Bologna, the Italy F20 event, there are 4 SFs which are Italian. Comporto (ranking 998) is interesting. He is 19 and recently he has been decent on the futures circuit. Yesterday he crushed the 2nd seed Villar 6-0 6-0 to now play Tenconi (563) in the SF. I remember he was on the junior circuit last year, but not as successful as the other 3, but in the futures he is starting to play well. The other match is Di Meo (672) and Vanni (507).

By the way Comporto will already go up to about 820 after reaching the final of Italy F19, so this will take another huge step. Good stuff.

Re: Italian Tennis

Vagnozzi pushed Horna all the way today in the Qualies ofr Hamburg. Unfortunate loss. Azzaro is also in the q's aswell as Naso and Cipolla who will play each other.

Re: Italian Tennis

Cipolla beat Naso in 3 in the final. Great run from Gianluca in this tournament! Top 350 I think now.

Re: Italian Tennis

Naso into the final against Cipolla. Impressive win against Ramirez Hidalgo. This is a major breakthrough for Naso.
