No, he wasn't. Tsonga was French #1 from January to November to begin with. Gasquet overtook him after Bercy but that was partly due to Tsonga's 3 month injury (out of Wimbledon, Washington, Montréal, Cincinnati and US Open).

Since many years, injuries are the only way Tsonga can lose his French #1 rank...

For the 5th time in 7 years, Tsonga will end up the year as our national #1.

That's a good point. Anyway, even without talking about Tsonga's injuries in 2010 and 2013, it's still impressive considering the depth of French players that he got the French YE #1 spot 4 times over the last 6 years (being #2 the other two years for a few points).

Re: French number 1

Funny to see all those messages in 2007, at the time Monfils and Gasquet were the biggest French hopes. At the end, Tsonga surpassed them by far.

Looking at recent year-end French number ones, it's striking how easily Tsonga is the best player out of them :
2008 : Tsonga
2009 : Tsonga
2010 : Monfils (Tsonga being injured 4 months and still only one rank behind him)
2011 : Tsonga
2012 : Tsonga
2013 : Gasquet (Tsonga being injured 3 months and still only one rank behind him)
2014 : for the moment, looking at the race, it's Tsonga easily, he's about 900 points ahead of Monfils

I would say Gasquet, then Paulo

Re: French number 1

Gael plays too erratically. He just hit any shot anytime without thinking. In terms of technicality and talent, I say Gasquet is the best French player.

Even if the ranking might not reflect the actual form of a player at a certain period, it ultimately determins a player's level.

This one is the million dollar question, a real enigma to think about
And I would still put PHM as best FH right now.
