A total of 77 countries have officially entered ‘By Country’ to compete in the Tennis Event at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
Entries ‘By Country’ closed on 1 April 2004 and by that deadline a total of 77 nations had submitted their entries, endorsed by their respective National Olympic Committees. Of those 77 nations 68 indicated they would nominate players for the Men's events and 56 indicated they would enter the Women's events.
These nations are not guaranteed places in the Tennis Event in Athens, but by entering ‘By Country’ they have the right to either enter players eligible for direct entry by ranking, or apply for ITF Places (Wild Cards).
A total of 52 countries were represented at the 2000 Olympic Games Tennis Event in Sydney.
Direct entry places in the Tennis Event will be allocated based on the international computer rankings of 14 June. At this point nations that have entered ‘By Country’ will be sent player nomination forms and application forms for ITF Places. Nations must then submit these forms to the ITF by than 28 June 2004, when the ITF will select the ITF Places.
