This made me laugh!

Laura Robson's new agent has said that the 19 year old left-handed British teenager reminds him of former men's world no. 1 Marcelo Rios, also a left-hander.

Max Eisenbud, who also manages Maria Sharapova and Li Na, comments in an interview to The Independent, "I think she's a special girl on and off the court. That's a hard combination to find. I've been lucky to find a couple [Maria Sharapova and Li Na]. I just love watching her play.

"Tennis-wise – I hate to put this label on her – I see her as the female Rios. It's fun to watch. Players like her don't come along often so I was really, really fortunate to be able to sign her. I'm very happy. I think she's a very real girl. She's not fake. I think what you see is what you get. She's refreshing. She's one of those girls that everybody wants to be friends with."

"Even though the UK is such a big and strong market, I think if she continues to play well and stays healthy she could definitely become a global star. I think it's no secret that if she plays great tennis, with her charisma, personality and looks, it's obvious that she can be very big. But she has a lot of work to do. All that is on the back burner for now. We just have to let her focus and play."

Oh well, at least they were happy with it (I wasn't, thought it was quite poorly researched and written, but it's still better than nothing).
Thanks for that, Jenrios.

It was a different sort of book, and Rios isn't known for co-operating with authors. It's not a straight-forward bio. And being as I'm quoted in it, I'm delighted with it

Thanks for the links - the house looks bloody awful! LOL!

On a Marcelo-related note - his futuristic-looking new house:

Article by Scoop Malinowski - Marcelo Rios And Family Approve My Rios Book

I was fortunate to meet Marcelo Rios and his mom and dad tonight at the Waldorf Astoria ATP Number One Celebration on Friday night. I am very proud that they all read and enjoyed the book.

After the formal part of the celebration, the Rios group stayed for a while after and were conversing up front near the stage, with his former agent Jeff Schwartz and a few others.

His dad Jorge approached me first introducing himself as Jorge Rios the father of Marcelo. I was a bit surprised at first, he looked straight into my eyes very serious. At first I wasn’t sure how he felt, but I held my ground and didn’t blink. A handsome strong man, he spoke slowly but firmly in very good English. He said he read it four months ago and he thought I did a very good job with the book, he knew I did a lot of “hard work” and he stated that he liked the unique way I did it and especially how so many of the players expressed respect for his son.

He also told me this was their first time to NYC in fifteen years and that Marcelo had also been to NYC when he was two years old.

Marcelo’s mom Alicia, a small woman with a bright, happy smile said, “Thank you very much for writing a book about my son,” before giving me a hug.

Marcelo Rios also came over to me and said, “So you’re Scoop,” and I replied, “So you’re Marcelo.” We had a little embrace. Marcelo also expressed that he liked the book, except for a few things said by “anonymous” people that weren’t true, but overall he added, “it was pretty good.”

It was a very special night. Very happy that the Rios family enjoyed my book and the unique way it was constructed. Stay tuned for photos (my phone battery died earlier in the night and tennis writer Kamakshi Tandon has the only other photos of me with the Rios clan).

(Note: Marcelo Rios: The Man We Barely Knew is available at and also the U.S. Open bookstore.)

Congratulations to Marcelo and his wife Paula on the arrival of their triplets - a son at last - Marcelo, and 2 daughters, Antonella and Agustna.

Yesterday, after noon, Marcelo Rios Pavic with his sisters Antonella and Augustina came to this world, ten days before the 36th birthday of his father and in the town where he grew up: Vitacura. According to the "Red Carpet", the child weighed a kilo and a half and girls, a kilo and a kilo 400 grams, respectively.

So, it seems this is the end....machine translated, sorry.

SANTIAGO .- Marcelo Rios is showed at his best physical and returned to succumb in the ATP Champions Tour that is taking place in the Central Court National Stadium. On Friday, former world number one lost his second match in the tournament. Now was the Argentine Mariano Zabaleta who noticed the "Chinese" 7-6, 6-2. Rivers was never found in the field and seeing that suffering physical discomfort in the back was not allowed to perform at their highest level began to get frustrated and never able to focus on the game. In this way, the Chilean was no chance of winning the title, since it has two defeats in as many games. The same player after the game said his feelings about the loss to the trans-Andean. "When you're not physically fit everything falls apart, I'm not enjoying the game even though you are winning, I'm not able to tie a game because I'm afraid of heartbreaking," he said. "I am not able to give and not worth feel as on the court after many years of success "reaffirmed. Finally, Rios admitted he does not want surgery again and that "can not play this level again" because of that injury.

Back Surgery, Expecting Triplets, But Marcelo Rios Is Back!
A back injury required surgery and his growing family needed his undivided attention, but former World No.1 Marcelo Rios is finally back on the ATP Champions Tour after more than two years away.
The Chilean went down to Greg Rusedski in his first match at the Royal Guard Champions in his home town of Santiago, and then revealed he and his wife are expecting triplets before the end of the year.
Rios, who thrashed Andre Agassi in Miami in 1998 to reach the world’s top ranking spot, could not keep the smile off his face despite losing 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 (Champions’ Tie-Break) to Rusedski.
“For sure it’s nice to feel the support from the crowd again,” said Rios, who was greeted by 10,000 people in his homeland after reaching No.1. “It’s been a long time that I didn’t play at all and it’s always fun to play in Chile. Flying and being away is tough with my family so being here, playing so close to my home is really nice.”
He already has three daughters, and is very excited at the prospect of welcoming three more children into the world.
“That (having triplets) is one of the reasons that it has been more difficult to concentrate on tennis!” he said. “My wife is already 26 weeks pregnant and you have triplets at about 32 weeks so she’s pretty big right now. And I already have three kids, so I have a big family and soon it will be very big. It’s very exciting and once they’re here it will be a lot of fun. I always wanted a big family.”
Having endured back surgery, the challenge has been trying to find time to rehabilitate and return to the court, particularly when doctors suggested it may not happen at all.
“I’ve been not feeling that good physically over the past two years,” said Rios. “I’ve had back surgery and it’s been pretty tough for me. They told me I wouldn’t be able to play tennis again. I’ve just been trying to do my best to be able to get back on the court.”
