Re: Last Movie you watched, and what you thought about it?

Last movie I saw in the cinema was the much-ballyhooed La La Land - 7/10

I'm gonna be real here - though I liked it overall, it was a pretty basic story with nothing particularly new or interesting to say but told rather well. Solid inessential entertainment in a nutshell, not the sort of thing that's usually going to be all that remembered in the long run, but there it is, winning every Golden Globe it was nominated in and nominated for a record-tying 14 Oscars . In my opinion though I didn't hate it it's well on its way to becoming the most overrated movie of all time .

I would compliment its ending though - perhaps the only part of the film I wouldn't describe as 'good not great'. The bookend with Mia dropping into the cafe she used to work and being offered a free drink just like an actress was while she used to work there was kinda cool, and the bittersweet ending overall does stick with me still when I think of the film. The scene where she has to check if a cake is gluten free or something and keeps getting distracted also drew an audible giggle out of me which doesn't often happen in a theatre.

I'm not saying Best Picture should necessarily always be reserved for Holocaust or Civil Rights baity films or something like that, but I think if you're going to heap that much praise on a more 'fluffy' piece by contrast, it should at least have something more exceptional or more original in its plot, humour or what have you than 'La La Land' did. But, it was still good.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol 9/10

When I first saw this for the first time last year, I was blown away by all of the slick action and set-pieces especially the Dubai Burj Khalifa building. That whole sequence alone gave me an adrenaline like no other and I still maintain it's the single best sequence of the entire Mission Impossible series.

Rewatching it now?

It reinforced my belief on how this is the best Mission Impossible movie when it comes to the character-team dynamic between Ethan Hunt, Benji and etc. Yet...it easily has the worst story since the villain is as generic as I remember. However, I liked the pacing of the jokes (and its purpose) as well as the Jeremy Renner character more this time. The latter kind of serves as an antithesis of Ethan Hunt's direct, confrontational, head-strong attitude to all his missions; and a critique to most action films in not being logical, cautious amidst of all these ridiculous scenarios they find themselves in. Good thing I noticed about the movie upon the 2nd time is how all the cool gadgets can compensate in explaining how all the characters do these implausible stuff.

Regardless, I think everyone on MTF that watches the Mission Impossible movies can make a good argument on why either the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th movie are the best of the series. The 2nd one...sucks. Period. But it's cool how every Mission Impossible is directed by different people; so they have their own take of the genre.

Too Late (2015) - this is what Tarantino wants to make when he grows up.

If you didn't know.

Yojimbo - A Fistful of Dollars
Seven Samurai - The Magnificent Seven

All good movies. But Japanese originals are cooler.

Celine And Julie Go Boating: First time I saw it several years back was a pretty revelatory experience for me.

Great chemistry between 2 leading actresses, a paean to childlike imagination with nods to Alice In Wonderland & Les Vampires. The self-reflexive 2nd half of the movie gets a bit repetitive yet the sheer creativity more than makes up for it.

The Last Stand

Action movie which doesn't take itself too seriously.

Passengers.

So, so, could have been much better. Interesting premise, OK love story in space, but a lot of plot-holes. I mean a lot.

JLaw looks great as a blonde though.

Star Wars Rogue One - 9/10 - Great movie. Well conducted story, without tiring battles and also without abusing of the technlogy, one thing the episodes 1, 2 and 3 surely did. For the first time I thought a Star Wars prequel made 100% sense.
