Unlikely that Roger will be #1. Basically there's a 90% chance that Rafa ends the year at #1.

So, Nadal is up by 1860 points. If Federer wins Shanghai, Basel, Paris and WTF, he will add 4000. Nadal needs 2141 points to establish himself as year end number one. He is in a very good position.

RAFA is basically a lock to end YE as the #1 unless an injury suddenly happens. As long as he is playing he has secured it already.

Pesse4577haver Mathematically possible that Fed can still edge past but I think he'll try for AO more next year

Yeah, I doubt Federer will try too hard at this point. Smarter to try and get that eternal 1 more slam next year.

After winning the USO, RAFA leads Fraud by 2000 points or so.

With only a few tournaments left, RAFA has pretty much secured YE1

Officially he's not taking any breaks anymore, but that's not saying a lot, since skipping Montreal doesn't really constitute a break, it's just one week difference.

That means, officially, he's scheduled to play all Masters, the USO, Basel and WTF, but we can assume he's at least going to skip one, if not two Masters between now and WTF.

What's Fed schedule for the rest of the year?

Playing 10 more tournaments than Federer, Nadal should get YE#1

He needs to make his opponents suffer. When he doesn't do that, he can lose, simple as that.

Players today like Thiem can play pim, pam, pum, and the point is over, even on clay. .

RAFA probably needs La Decima@RG to be assured of making the WTF. I give him a 50-50 chance to win it.

Uncle Toni and RAFA did the right thing to beat Djokovic in Madrid and put more fear and doubt into his head.

After this, Rome did not matter as much.

It is not about #1 for now, it is all about winning La Decima@RG, no?

Like I said, no true RAFA fans should be that bothered by today's loss since it was calculated safe strategy and RAFA needed a break. He has been digging deep in almost every tournaments he entered this year and has been the #1 player of the year so far (~1000 points above #2). 10 days rest here will do wonder for him prior to Roland Garros, where he has won NINE times.

I admit I got greedy and wanted RAFA to do a full sweep of clay season but RAFA proved to be wiser today. Hopefully fate rewards him at RG where he is going for his #10 title deservedly.
