I figured to make one huge clay court tournament thread instead of having a seperate one for each tournament. I'll update the title each week. :)

According to Andy's interview in Miami his clay court schedule looks something like this:

-Monte‑Carlo(1st round lost to Jean-Rene Lisnard 6-4 6-7 5-7)
-Barcelona(2nd round lost to David Ferrer 6-4 6-7 (4) 1-6) :(
-Rome (1st round lost to Filippo Volandri 4-6, 4-6) :fiery:
-Hamburg(2nd round lost to James Blake 3-6, 3-6)
-Roland Garros (1st round loss to Gael Monfils 5-4, 7-6(2),6-1, 2-6, 1-6) :sobbing:

A very busy schedule for Andy, but hopefully he can have some good results :yeah:

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

He will be fine. Never mind him swearing at an official in DC, i hope he starts showing a little more passion on court. I think he has toned it down a little too much this year. It is stifling him a little. His clay court prospects are hard to judge. It could be a huge few weeks for him. Given the polarity at the top of the mens game between those who love the dirt, and those who loathe it, this time of year is when Andy could really soar up the rankings and have some healthy points in the bank over the players who just have to suffer this surface before they can head to the green courts of england.

He does have an all-round game which should suit all surfaces. He loves long technical rallies. In full flow Murray is quite an esoteric tennis player and i am hoping he will shine. Lacks some of the power of the big hitters but could cause some damage in the weeks to come. His lack of points is well known. One qf and a few second/third rounds and he will be seeded for french, and thereafter wimbledon. If you read the article of what Muster apparently said, he thought Murray had tweaked his game more towards the hard courts, but he trained on this stuff in spain constantly. This should be second-nature to him.

Come on Andy, i am hoping for a big few weeks!! Shame he isn't playing valencia this week, but he has been ill, so get better, clear your head after DC, and enjoy monte carlo!

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

Ok Andy will play J.R. Lisnard of France (WC) in round one here at monte-carlo. This is a gift and Andy must take it. Lisnard can play a bit on clay, but Andy really couldn't have got it any easier for round one in a top masters event.

Assuming the inevitable walkover, he will play Nadal in round two.

All week live on sky sports xtra i believe, so come on Andy, do us proud!!!!

He won in san jose minus his coach, so bound to take the title here, no problem! We can but dream!

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

Its good he is playing doubles, it is often forgotten that Rusedski has a few doubles titles to his name. Playing with Tim is a good thing for Andy and a wise choice. Good luck to him and the Tiger.

Andy will play the lizard on tuesday, which is a shame because i will be back at work and unable to watch the match live! However, there are some nice games to watch tomorrow, the first two acasuso v verdasco and then rochus v monfils should be enjoyable. Tiger and Greg are up later in the day, although i think Tim has more chance than Greg who is widely tipped to get thumped by Chela.

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

I'm pretty excitied to see how Andy handles himself on clay. Lisnard might cause Andy some trouble plus he'll have the crowd behind him.

Andy playing dubs with Tiger Tim can only help his game.

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

I have no doubts Andy will win. Consider that this guy lost to both dick norman and h.t. lee on clay last year, has done nothing of note on the challenger circuit this year and you have to say Andy should win this easily. Home advantage didn't help Monfils this morning and is not much of a factor in tennis anyway to be honest.

I think if Andy lost this match it would be his worst defeat since he lost in one of his north american challengers last year to some australian nobody whose name i can't remember!!!

Come on Muzza, do us proud!

That’s all well and good but with Andy u never know what ur going to get. As for home advantage it’s a HUGE factor. Playing in front of ur home crowd can carry u to a win or u can wilt under the pressure. Hopefully Andy can get a win on the red stuff.

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

True, Andy has been a model of mystery this year with some of his play. However, i have seen this lisnard guy play a few times in the past, and every time, he just looked awful. Aside from a few of the qualifiers or a match against one of the clay loathers, Andy could not have been dealt a kinder draw. I sense Andy will make strides this week, and i know he will be desperate for a crack at Nadal in round two.

I just don't believe home advantage makes much difference in tennis, except SOME players seem to play better on their own soil. You saw that with some of the yanks last week at Houston. Mardy Fish in a clay final could NEVER happen in europe. There is something in it, but Lisnard will need a lot more than crowd fervour to oust our man Murray here. He needs ability he simply does not possess.

Andy won the first set 6-4 and now we are in a tiebreak in the 2nd with Andy down a mini-break. Andy was serving for the match at 5-4. :smash:

Come on Andy!!

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

Just posting here before any oxygen thieves come in here to have their 'fun'.

He didn't play well, he looked like he didn't want it enough, too many UE's, still crappy serving, too defensive and not offensive enough when ahead in the match.

I don't know if he'll make it to the top, I really don't, he can beat two top 10'ers and lose to Lisnard, you need consistency to be a champion and I don't know whether he will find it at all.

No longer posting in GM and the gloating, arrogant sad morons who pollute it. I'll probably stay in non-tennis or here, where I don't have to put up with such nasty hatred and abuse of my favourite player.

Murray Out as Cramps Strike Again

Andy Murray slumped to a disappointing 6-4 6-7 5-7 defeat against local favourite Jean-Rene Lisnard in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

The British number one won the first set but lost the next two as leg cramps brought him to a virtual standstill.

The Scot later recovered to partner Tim Henman in the doubles against Tomas Berdych and Jarkko Nieminen.

The British duo advanced to round two after their opponents retired when trailing 3-2 in the first set.

Murray was making his first appearance since ending his 10-month partnership with coach Mark Petchey.

The Dunblane teenager, who was recovering from a virus as well as an ankle injury suffered in Miami, later blamed a lack of match practice for his first-round exit to Lisnard.

"I knew I wasn't 100% fit coming into the match, I had very little time to practice because of the ankle injury and then the sickness," said Murray.

"I just don't understand why I get cramp because I don't feel tired at all. Going on to play, I didn't feel `I don't want to go out there'.

"I felt fine enough to play. But when your legs cramp, you just can't do anything. I don't quite know what it is.

"Obviously, this is my first match on clay, so I wasn't expecting to play great and feel great on the court.

"But I had a lot of chances to win the match."

Murray looked set for victory after winning the first set and opening up a 3-1 lead in the second.

Some scrappy play allowed Lisnard to hit back, the 26-year-old Monegasque, ranked more than 100 places below Murray, squaring the match by winning the tie-break 7-5.

Murray's fitness then disintegrated rapidly, although he briefly led 4-2 in the deciding set before losing it 6-4.

At least he and Tim won in doubles if there's some consolidation for his loss. I didn't see the match so I can't judge on how he played, buts its upsetting to here that he lost to Lisnard.

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

I just got home after a busy day at work and i am very sad to see Andy lost, especially as i was telling everyone how crap Lisnard was.

Hopefully he can practice and train hard and get himself in the best condition. That was a match he should have won!

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

It was hard watching Andy in the match esp at the end when he cramped. He had a brain cramp in the 2nd when he had a chance to win it. Let's face it Andy is not fit. He cramps so often it's almost his trademark. I know he was sick and injured but he can't use that as an excuse. From what I hear he's still eating junk food. Andy's got a nice game but he needs good fitness to back it up. I can't imagine him going 5 sets at RG.

On the positive side Andy looked like he knew what he was doing on clay for the most part. He played some nice droppers/loopers and he can slide. I guess all that work in Spain actually did help some.

Re: *~~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Monte Carlo~~*

Andy and Tiger Time lost in the dubs 10-8 in the 3rd. So that pretty much wraps it up for MC.

Aww, that Andy and Tim lost. It looked like a pretty exciting match from the scoreline against a tough, tough opponent.

That's really good to hear that he seems be comfortable on clay and know what's he doing. Hopefully, it will all pay off soon. However, as you said, he is going to have to work on his fitness and even mental toughness.

Re: *~Andy's Clay Court Tournament Cheering Thread: Open Seat Godó 2006~*

Maybe we hope for too much from Andy sometimes; let's see if next week brings better results. He has a natural love for Barcelona and so let's see one year on from his atp debut here against Hernych how much he has learned and improved. He nearly won that day.

Let's await the draw and be optimistic.
