Re: Discuss YOUR tennis

Well I have had the yearly singles at my club again won my first match 6-2 , 6-0 then lost my second match 6-2 , 6-3 . I kind of knew I was never going to win . He is the fattest tennis player I have ever played . I felt I did as well as I could . He has a very good serve and gets more spin and power on his shots than me . He also has good slice and I found his serve hard to get used too . I did break it once . I could sense he was getting a little tired in the second set and I could get the serve back a bit more easy . He also has Asthma lol . I did as well as I could thought . Wish I held at 4-3,down in the second but really I did well to get 5 games . He's been playing about 35 years I think .

Had a good match in the men's doubles at my club first round but we lost 6-4 , 6-4 . The pair we played are 2 first teamers at the club and where runners up last year . I feel we did about as well as we could.

Lost 6-1 , 2-6 , 6-0 . I couldn't move him from the middle of the court enough. Lost all my energy at the end. Getting moved from side to side too much. Also the match was really bizarre . My forehand was really off. Backhand was absolutely on fire. Thinking I am going to take a small break. Very strange match . He deserved it thought.

Tomorrow?! Not much prep time. At this point, most important is mental game: Excerpt from my book, The Winning Weekend Warrior by John Thomas:

"CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE: NEVER GIVE UP.

Why would you? What is the point? You can influence the future with a positive or negative attitude, but you cannot completely control it, and you cannot predict it. Never give up. Never assume that the other player or the other team enjoys all the luck, better abilities, better strategy and there is no way you can win. You never know. Momentum can shift. A key player on the other team may have an unexpected physical problem. You may find a new tactic that works. For example, in tennis, you may be playing a player who hits every hard shot of yours back twice as hard. They hit twice as many winners as you. They make half as many unforced errors. They are winning every single game! Then, instead of trying to “outgun” your opponent, you hit high looping shots deep to their backhand. They try but fail to return these just as they were doing your hard drives. Suddenly you are winning a lot of games."

Re: Discuss YOUR tennis

1. You and your partner should practice with each other: net play, lobs, service returns and serves.
2. Warm up sufficiently before every match.
3. Improve your fitness.
4. Communicate! Before every serve, a quick signal about whether the returner will try to lob over net person, hit deep to server, drop shot. Similarly, if you are serving, tell your partner whether you are going wide or down the middle so you can poach more effectively. Of course, you have to stay flexible in your attitude. You may be *intending* to hit a drop shot off a serve but the particular serve makes that unwise.
If you are really ambitious, you should both read my book: The Winning Weekend Warrior -- -see my author page at https://www.amazon.com/author/truthtable

Match tomorrow in the semis of the singles. i got removed from the mens doubles as my partner went back to france. the guy that has won it for the last 4 years has been hammered by a newbie. All i have heard is that he has a massive serve and is really really good apparently.

Just keep the ball in play while using full strokes. That is, use full slow swings making sure you have good net clearance (a lot of people on MTF would call this moonballing, but it's really just hitting top spin balls and a great way to guarantee that you hit lots of them correctly). Once you and your friend have good control over the ball in terms of direction and depth, then you can increase your swing speed.

People end up with wonky strokes because they focus on results (i.e. winning points/rallies) and not the process (i.e. hitting correctly).

If you can, have someone video you hitting. You would not believe the difference between how you think you're swinging vs how you are really swinging.

Won my second match in the men 's singles at my club 5-7 , 7-5 , 7-5. Won from 2-5 down in the third. Into the semi's now. Playing a a guy that's about 16 or 17 . He beat a guy I can never get a set off in straights ( I did give him some tips for it ) I am hoping my advice has something to do with it. Been removed from the doubles as my partner has gone back to France . Lol .

Just practise, and maybe watch some other players play to pick up on a few things they do.

Re: Discuss YOUR tennis

Played a tennis triathlon for charity at my club over the weekend. Played 4 hours Saturday and nearly 6 hours Sunday. Won 2 sets of singles 6-4 , 6-1 playing I guy I have never beat before. However he played a lot more hours in the triathlon than me so I got lucky.

Re: Discuss YOUR tennis

Had 2 sets of singles with two different guys and won both sets 6-2 . Getting ready for a match in the singles at my local club . Playing a guy that's about 21 and I think he also does coaching at another club . I know him a bit but never played him. Confidence is very low for this one. I've seen him play a lot and he also plays this guy I play a lot. I normally get beat quite heavily by the guy I normally play and the guy I am playing is his regular practise partner. Lol . Will do my best.

Had two sets of singles against a really nice kid at the club . He is 17 I think. Used to play a bit but is trying to get back into it after a break. I won 6-0 , 6-0 .
