Re: The Livescore thread!

Here is Andy Roddick's early record:

Delray Beach 1st round Tieleman 6-7 5-7

Miami 1st round Vicente 6-4 6-0
2nd round Agassi 2-6 3-6

Cincinnati 1st round Pozzi 6-7 1-6

Washington 1st round Voinea 6-3 6-4
2nd round Santoro 4-6 6-3 6-3
3rd round Kucera 7-6 6-1
4th round Agassi 4-6 4-6

US Open 1st round Costa 3-6 7-6 1-6 4-6

Memphis 1st round Dupuis 6-4 7-5
2nd round Haas 7-6 0-6 4-6

San Jose 1st round Woodruff 6-4 6-4
2nd round Gambill 6-7 6-7

Delray Beach 1st round Vanek 4-6 7-6 4-6

After which he really took off.

I would imagine Andy Roddick was considerably stronger than Andy Murray at that age but their early results are comparable.

i think thats a fair comment, it was the same for Nadal last year before he went into the gym and bulked up a bit

To talk about "man against boy" is really a rather trite and inane response, nothing more than uttering the patently obvious. Murray is still a raw rookie in the professional game, but compared to his peers who have taken the same route and now occupy high positions in the echelons of tennis Andy compares very favourably.

I dare say if you compared Andy's FIRST year on the pro circuit with all the players in the current top 20 you might find it an educational experience.
Andy is about on a par with Gasquet this time last year (Gasquet is a year older approx)

Similarly Roddick, Federer and even Sampras had comparable records when they first started on the ATP main tour.

So Andy is not far short of these players when they first started.

When Tim Henman broke through (2 years older) he went from 99 to 20s the following year. Gasquet is now inside the top 20 in 2nd full year. Roddick reached no 17 having started the year around 115.

By the end of next year Andy is likely to be inside the top 30 unless he is injured or loses form.

I still stand by my comment that it was "man against boy" and everyone I know who watched the match on tv has agreed that Andy had nothing to hurt Safin with.

In no way was this meant as a criticism of Andy. He is a kid and cannot be expected to have the muscular strength of a top athlete, given he is still growing.

In some matches a player has the chance to win but fails to grasp it. In Andy's case the matches against Nalbandian, Fish and Baccanello might be said to fall in to that category. The match against Safin does not. (that is not to rule out the possibility that Safin might have handed the match to Andy had he continued the way he was playing in the 2nd set)

Andy has done really well since Queens and should be proud of his efforts. He now knows he can compete with several of the top 30 players. However, he still has some way to go if he wants to match the likes of Safin.

His initial target for the year was no 50 (mentioned by his previous coach)though this has been changed to no 100. He is certainly in a strong position to get inside the top 100 by the end of the year. Which is a fine achievement since he started the year around 385 and especially given his injury problems and lack of form in the first 6 months.
