Ian Thorpe has only won 3 individual gold medals at 2 Olympics (400 free - 2000, 200 + 400 free - 2004).

to put this into perspective, Yana Klochkova has won 4 individual gold medals in 2 Olympics (the 200 + 400 Individual Medley double at both Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympics). But because she was born and raised, and trains in a non-Western country, she receives hardly any recognition, when in fact, she is the best IM'er the World has ever seen - mens or womens.

Inge de Bruijn has also won 4 individual gold medals at 2 Olympic Games - Sydney 2000: 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly, Athens 2004 - 50 free.

Yet all anyone ever hears about, is Ian Thorpe this, Ian Thorpe that. He is a good swimmer, a great swimmer, but in terms of achievements, he is not the best around, yet.

Popov is a great guy, I was lucky enough to train with him regularlay here in Canberra, before he and his coach made the move to Switzerland.

A true legend. The way he upset Biondi and Spitz in Barcelona in the 50 and 100 free - 2 great swims, if you haven't seen them, go watch them on video.
The 1996 Atlanta swims were pretty good too, although he was already King by then.

The absence of Thorpe and Van den Hoogenband devaluated the tournament, imho. Yet, I've seen quite a few spectacular races! That South African Shoeman, boy can he swim FAST! :yeah:
it's a shame that many of the elite swimmers only contest the Olympics with any vigour, although it also makes the Olympics that more valuable each time they come around.

thorpe said somethin about 8 medals in the past olympics right
correct, Thorpey has 8 Olympic medals:

2000 - 1st 400m free (3:40.59, WR), 2nd 200m free (1:45.83), 1st 4x100m free relay (3:13.67, WR), 1st 4x200m free relay (7:07.05, WR)

2004 - 1st 200m free (1:44.71), 1st 400m free (3:43.10), 3rd 100m free (48.56), 2nd 4x200m free relay (7:07.46), 6th 4x100m free relay (3:15.77)

lets compare Thorpe to Phelps:

2004 - 1st 100m butterfly (51.25), 1st 200m butterfly (1:54.04), 1st 200m Ind. medley (1:57.14), 1st 400m Ind. medley (4:08.26), 3rd 200m free (1:45.32), 1st 4x200m free relay (7:07.33), 3rd 4x100m free relay (3:14.62)

5 gold (4 individual), 2 bronze (1 individual).

In terms of medals, one would assume that over the course of his career, Phelps will easily out-tally Thorpe. This is due to Phelps versatility, although who knows how long he will be able to maintain his incredible fitness levels across all strokes.

I'm not sure if you have heard of it, the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport). Well, it is based in Canberra, where I live - and although I have never been on scholarship there, the coaches know me and I'm invited to train there from time to time.

I wanted him to win the double crown in Sydney 2000 - 50 and 100 free, because he won the double at both Barcelona and Atlanta.

He didn't swim well in Sydney, 1 bronze medal I think is all he won, but then at the Barcelona World Champs a few years ago, Alex did it again, winning the 50 and 100 free from Hoogie.

I thought he could do it, but  - it actually hurt watching him swim in Athens.

He has at least 1 child, maybe 2 by now, and he will take up a coaching role somewhere in swimming, I am sure - so he has plenty to keep him busy in his after life :).

its a shame swimming doesnt have a very high profile.

I mean, if Roddick and Agassi pulled out of a tennis tournament, people would still pay attention to it, no? :p

my best events are 50 and 100m free, 100m backstroke, and 100m fly.

unfortunately, when I trained with Popov, I was probably a little too young to realise just how great he actually was .
