Has anyone heard anything about this?

Ferrero in doubt for Heineken Open
01 December 2005

Former world No 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero is in doubt for the Heineken Open tennis tournament in Auckland.

When the tournament organisers received the field yesterday from the ATP (international men's tournament authority), Ferrero's name was missing.

Tournament director Graham Pearce said both Ferrero and the ATP had confirmed his entry earlier, but he was baffled when the list, without his name, arrived yesterday.

The tournament organisers are not allowed to fit Ferrero or any player into the tournament, whether in the main draw or through wild card, without ATP approval and there is a concern that if the list is not amended Ferrero will miss out.

If Ferrero is included, one player in the current list, will have to be dropped. Wild cards have already been allocated.

But Pearce said the field was so strong that Ferrero's absence wouldn't be noticed.

He said he'd know in the next 48 hours what ATP intended to do.

Meanwhile the draw released yesterday for the January 9-14 tournament shows that all eight seeded players are inside the world top 35.

Defending champion Fernando Gonzalez, of Chile, heads the field at a career-high 11 followed by Spain's David Ferrer at 15, American Robby Ginepri 16 and former champion Dominik Hrbaty at 19.

Croatian Davis Cup player Mariano Ancic is No 22 in the world. The giant Croat is part of a powerful Croatian team who play Hrbaty's Slovak side in the Davis Cup final this weekend.

Ancic, a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2004, was scheduled to play in this year's Heineken Open, but injury forced him out of the event.

This year he has had a good time on court, winning the Hertogenbosch title on grass and making the final at Scottsdale and Tokyo.

Returning to Auckland as a likely sixth seed is popular 2005 finalist Olivier Rochus, of Belgium.

Rochus had a magical start to 2005 with a semifinal run at Adelaide, followed by his effort at Auckland and then a fourth-round finish at the Australian Open.

Other top results included reaching the semis at Nottingham and Stockholm. He will be joined by older brother Christophe in the main draw. Olivier Rochus is ranked at 28 and his brother is No 42.

Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, at No 29, is the likely seventh seed followed by Wimbledon quarterfinalist Feliciano Lopez at No 34 as eighth seed.

High on potential is Marcos Baghdatis, of Cyprus. The 20-year-old was the world's top junior two years ago and has steadily improved from his year-end ranking of 153 in 2004 to 56.

His best result in 2005 was at the Australian Open where he beat Ivan Ljubcic and Tommy Robredo before losing to Roger Federer in the fourth round.

He also reached his first career singles final at Basel before losing to Gonzalez.

Another 20-year-old to watch for is Stanislas Wawrinka at No 55.

He is a member of the Swiss Davis Cup team and was a finalist at Gstaad as well as a quarterfinalist at Barcelona.

Britain's 18-year-old Andy Murray is in the field. He is ranked No 64 and will be a dangerous floater in the draw.

Chilean Nicolas Massu will take the court as Olympic Games gold medallist in singles and doubles. In Athens he became the first player to win the singles and doubles title at an Olympics. The former top-10 player is currently ranked No 66.

Veteran Danish player Kenneth Carlsen, 32 is also returning to Auckland. He was a finalist at the event in 1997, losing to Jonas Bjorkman in a final.

Karol Beck, of Slovakia, is another player who is featuring in the Davis Cup final. He has been an integral part of his nations run into their first ever final and scored a win over Guillermo Coria in singles and a doubles win in the semifinals against Argentina.

The article from Hola magazine says that Patricia was the star of the opening of the bridal salon in Valencia. The designer Rosa Clará assembled well known names, such as Juanqui, for the opening.
