Andy Murray on clay. Will he ever win a clay title?

With all his moon balling and great tactician tennis, wouldn't his game translate well on clay? I don't understand why his results aren't so good on clay. I know he was injuried last year and didn't have a chance to play during the clay court season, but still...

Re: Explanation for Murray ineptitude on clay???

He doesn't know how to move on the surface or construct points, and his strokes (especially that forehand :tape:) lack any penetration.

I agree with everything above. The same exact thing could be used to explain Federer's lackluster clay results over his career.

Whut.

This thread is going waaaaay off topic.

But Murray is the one to beat at Wimbeldon, unless Roger is 100%

Re: Explanation for Murray ineptitude on clay???

It's mostly his style of tennis. Murray like to hit some junkballs that lack both power and heavy topspin. On hardcourt he gets away with it, because those balls bounce lower and it's harder to be aggressive on them.

On clay Murray is easier to attack. It's his own fault really. If he ditched his crappy junk shots and went for more heavy forehands or at least actual moonballs (high bounce is also hard to attack, especially from the BH side) but instead he often gives the opponent command of the points.

That might work well vs the lower ranked players even on clay but later in the tournament, QF-> when he faces players in form or the top10, then it's not very efficient. He needs to win matches on his own rather than hoping for tons of errors or that hurricane winds saves the day. He is clearly capable of hitting both heavy forehands and backhands so his problem is mostly in his head. His junkshots are simple not as efficient on clay, yet he plays clay like any other surface.

He has started hitting his fh much heavier and more aggressive post Wimbledon but its still a forgone conclusion that he will not amount to much this clay court season as that loss the stan indicates.

Re: Explanation for Murray ineptitude on clay???

A player who relies on his returning who isn't comfortable moving on clay is pretty much the essence of a mug on the surface.

He spent a good bit of time in Barcelona, no reason why his moving shouldn't be at least average on the surface.

Re: Explanation for Murray ineptitude on clay???

I disagree with most of the posts.
I really think that he played fantastic in 2011 on clay and he has some seasons to show how good he can actually play on clay.

Why is Murray so bad on clay?

Mugray game perfectly suits clay. He is great in defence, he can run from side to side for hours, he spins ball quite well and his weak FH is less exposed on it, aswell as his bad second serve.

So my question is, why is he so bad on it? Zero titles on clay for guy with so many masters and one slam and " all around game"

His game, like Lleyton Hewitt's is much more suited for faster surfaces.. Clay requires a strong offensive game to stay on top of the point as great defense doesn't necessarily get you back in the point whereas on faster surfaces defensive shots can do so. Look at why Rafa is so strong on the surface, he is very unrelenting and consistently makes you play defense.

Re: Andy Murray on clay. Will he ever win a clay title?

I think it is also highly interesting to note that there have been many more clay courters (especially in recent years) that have translated well onto the faster surfaces than the other way around. While the movement is certainly a factor here, I think it correlates exactly with the offensive/defensive game idea.

Can Murray win RG 2014?

They say Wimbledon second week is pretty much clay, we saw Murray routined the computer No.1, the same player one smash away from beating the clay GOAT three weeks ago, clearly that means Murray is the best clay court player now. If he decides to play RG2014, who can stop him?

Even if some say this, it doesn't make it less absurd.

Andy is not gonna win RG.

Re: Can Murray win RG 2014?

These threads are getting ridiculous now. :haha: Don't get too excited because of an accident today okay ? Just because Djokovic didn't play his match and Murray took advantage of it, doesn't mean Murray's gonna start winning everything. It won't ever happen.

Re: Can Murray win RG 2014?

Mugray chickened out of clay season this year. He never won a 250 clay title and never made a clay tournament final. He's a mug on clay who can't hit with spin, construct points, hit a good FH or slide correctly. He's Radwanska of the men's game. His clay game is not even top 20 material. He realized it, why can't his fangirls too?

Doc dragged me back to reality.
