After the success of the Roland Garros thread, let's get this going for Wimbledon. The draw is merely days away, and the warm up tournaments are in full flow. (draw will be posted in the OP as soon as it comes out)

Some of us are probably still not recovered from one of the most exciting slams we've had in a while. A semi final that saw a similar amount of drama, quality and tension that made the Wimbledon final of 2008 the greatest match of all time. With the same winner.

With the glorious sight of clay court tennis still fresh in our minds, it's time for a whole different cup of tea. Grass court tennis. Purists will love the sight of fast paced, aggressive tennis. Cynics will have something to moan about the surface speed, but the fact remains, it's still so very different from hardcourts and clay courts.

Starring:

Roger Federer

The 7-time Wimbledon champion is still hungry for more. Got rid of the nasty aftertaste of yet another disappointing defeat at Roland Garros by finally claiming his first title of the year on the grass of Halle. Some say he's well and truly finished this time, but the same was being said last time around when he took home another Wimbledon trophy by silencing 2011 champion Novak Djokovic and crowd favourite Andy Murray. The defending champion will have his work cut out, but the roof surely is a big advantage for an established indoor player like himself. A few drops of rain at the right time could be just what he needs to clinch a record breaking 18th slam and 8th Wimbledon. Can he do what Rafa managed to do at Roland Garros?

Andy Murray

Could this finally be his time? He's getting ever closer. After a heartbreaking loss in the final last year to Roger Federer, he has bounced back by bulldozing that same Roger Federer in the Olympic final on the grass of Wimbledon. Last week saw him win another Queens title by beating Marin Cilic in the final. Skipped Roland Garros so he could be in tip-top shape for the big one. Arguably the favourite with his impressive grass court results of late. What we know for sure, is that he'll have the crowd's full support. Can it lift him to greatness and the Wimbledon title?

Novak Djokovic

Played some of the finest grass court tennis of his career in 2011 to become Wimbledon champion. Afterwards has looked shaky on his least favourite surface and questions are being raised if his 2011 run was a one-off occasion. Lost to Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro at the Olympics, and Federer had defeated him a while earlier at Wimbledon. The bookies have made him the hot favourite despite the doubts. Is probably still having nightmares about some crucial points that cost him against Nadal at the French Open. Can he redeem himself and win his seventh slam?

Rafael Nadal

Well, well, well, what can be said about Rafa Nadal? Seven tournament wins out of nine finals, first man to win the same slam eight times and easily the leader in the ATP race. The two-time former champion is the big question mark at Wimbledon this year. Although the nine finals are very impressive, eight of those have come on clay. And despite him winning his only tournament off-clay on the hardcourts of Indian Wells, how he'll perform and how his knees hold up away from the red dirt is something that we will have to find out. Suffered a shocking round 2 exit against Lukas Rosol in 2012, which showed again that he is vulnerable to big hitters early on in the tournament. Even at Roland Garros he had trouble. Once he gets past the first week though, be afraid, because he has been there before, knows what it takes and when he sees the finish line, he is not one to slow down.

Dark Horses

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. A notoriously great grass court player who can catch fire at any time. Still lacks the consistency to be named among the big favourites, but look out if he has an on-day.

Tomas Berdych. Former Wimbledon finalist, with several big wins on the grass. Crashed out in R1 to Ernest Gulbis last year and won't want to let this happen again.

Tommy Haas. 35 years old, or young more like it. Rolling back the years and a fine grass courter looking for one last dreamrun.

Juan Martin Del Potro. Olympic bronze medalist. Grass isn't his favourite surface, but he can certainly play on it.

Jerzy Janowicz. Had a nice run here last time and can do serious damage with his big serve and heavy groundstrokes. Whether he can keep it up for long enough is a big if.

Ernests Gulbis. Huge hitter. Probably the most dangerous unseeded player out there. Failed against a rejuvinated Monfils at the French, won't be in danger of meeting him again.

Grigor Dimitrov. After several disappointing losses recently, this can be just what he needs. Has all the tools to excel on grass, just needs that big breakthrough.

Xavier Malisse. Won't win it, but he is one of the better grass court players around and can have a good run with the right draw. All or nothing most likely, book a R1 exit or a R4/QF run.

Lukas Rosol. Probably won't back up his fairytale moment from last year, but all eyes will be on him regardless, especially if he gets a marquee player or dare we dream, a rematch with Rafael Nadal?

I said it in another thread and I'll repeat it here: I see Rafa as the favourite for the title. He's shown unbelievable consistency on grass (5 wimbledon finals) and he's riding a 9 final streak (with an impressive 7 won).

Nole has yet to prove his 2011 success here wasn't a fluke (grass being his worst surface).

Murray has the game to win on grass but he must prove he has the mental strength to win his home slam with great pressure on him.

Fed has gone AWOL all year... Unless he miraculously finds some form here he could very well lose in the quarters again.

If Rafa has a decent draw and survives the first week (which he has managed to do most of the times), I don't see who could stop him here.

From BBC live text:

Murray* 6-7 5-5 Ferrer
Ferrer is a machine today, an indefatigable automaton. Whatever Murray hits at him he sends back with punitive interest. Scratch that - my mockers work is done as Ferrer pushes a forehand wide, tugs at a backhand and then sends a forehand into the net. Break back, Ferrer's worst game of the entire match just as I upped the eulogies.

Ferrer is such a mug  His mental midgetery there cost Tsonga a Slam final against Federer (a far more winnable proposition for him than Djokovic or Murray)

Neither did/will Del Potro.

Double standard.
del Potro never beat Federer in the final of a Slam he had won five years in a row prior

In order, my favourites are:

Nadal
Murray
Federer
Djokovic
Tsonga
Berdych

The biggest question is how sharp will Federer be. At his best he is the favourite. Last year he played close to his best when it mattered, and if he does this again he will win.

I actually think at his best tsonga is the second best grass court player but he is so inconsistent. If he can get on a roll he has a chance to win this.

Moozza picking Murray to win, that's completely out of the blue!

I'm shocked too. awaiting here for Tiebreak100 to give his seal of approval :spit:.

Where the heck is this thread going? As someone already said, we don't have the draw, yet we've got 6 pages of pure nonsense. Rafa fans talking about Rafa, Muzza fans going about Andy being the real deal, Fed fans protecting Fed, Nole fans bubbling about Nole ... over 100 posts about nothing ...

Probably more then any other grand slam the draw, especially what opponents the top guys get in the first week, makes is interesting. At the other slams u can expect the top players to reach second week without any big problems. But here,u can always get a surprise or see the top guys play some 5 setters right of the bat.
So,anyone having to play the likes of Gulbis,Rosol,Brands,Llodra,Hewitt or Baghdatis in R1 or R2 can have it a tough time. And then there is the other category of R1 or R2 opponents where no top player should even lose a set against: Andujar,Ramos,Lorenzi and so on.

Won his last two tournaments on grass court.

Finalist in the last three slams.

Olympic champion.

Dismantled Federer in 3 straight sets last time they met on centre court.

US open champion.

#2 seed

Anyone who has Murray not in their top 4 for this event is completely deluded.

How could you go with Nadal and Djoker over two players who are batter grass courters than they are? Nadal lost to a nobody last year. Although now everyone knows his name. Rosol. His performance on clay has no bearing on how he'll do at Wimby. He hasn't played a grass match since that embarrassing loss in round 2 last year. Don't let your fandom get in the way of common sense.

this year has got 2009 all over it once nadal decided to pull out of the tournement the britqish media immediately said this was murrays time, its the same this year but people believe murray can beat nadal now. so i expect murray to loose to someone really unexpected this year just as it looks like hes gonna win the whole thing. pesonally i think djokovic could win as could nadal, the only question mark of djokovic is if the french open loss to nadal has effected him or not, last year at wimbledon it looked as if the french loss to nadal did, also he lost to an inspired federer. nadal like most years comes into wimbledon with the confidence of winning the french and is probably co favourite with djokovic and will be difficult to beat. i personally dont think you can take last years form into account because if you did nadal wouldnt have a chance, but i expect nadal and murray on the same half with nadal coming through and djokovic waiting in the final after beating the conqueror of federer, i.e tsonga, berdych etc

So Rafa is seeded fifth. Good to know.

#148 ·
MTF ..You think Rafa is not a favorite because he lost last year to Rosol, the guy who played the match of his life(I never seen a guy ballbashing that good for such a long time).Same thing was said on his comeback, that he won't win a title this season, and look how far he got, also said NO CHANCE in Indian Wells, and yet he won it.

People think Murray routined Novak in a Bo3 match, the score being 7-5 7-5 and therefore he has no chance against "the best grass court player with no Wimbledon"

If there is something I learned about Rafa, that is to Never write him off!

IMO the favorites are :

1)Nadal
2)Djokovic-Murray
3)Federer

i agree i don't think the Rosol result means anything going into Wimby this year. And i suppose he has to be the slight favorite all things considered ( confidence level, H2H with other top 4, 2nd week grass--playing like a claycourt etc..)

#150 ·
I don't see how the seedings could possibly produce that. Only upsets on one half of the draw can. We are, after all, insured that Djokovic and Murray will be on separate halves. And there is no imaginable big-4 meeting that would see a huge favourite, unless one has been extremely impressive in the first six matches and the other barely scraping through easy opponents.
