Re: The Captain Obvious Thread.

Actually Brad has always said good things about Andy R and was very professional about the split I agree with Tangerine what good would it do him anyways? What is in the past, stays in the past.

Boy, they sure do try hard to get Gilbert to say something bad about the Andys. It won't happen. He is a hight profile coach and if he were to start bad mouthing former employers then he would never coach again.

Huge win for the U.S. over the Czech Republic. Roddick rose to the challenge of winning on the road and on clay. Since the U.S. is the host I’m assuming the quarterfinal match against Spain will be played on grass. Big props to the depleted Russian squad for taking out a tough Chilean team on clay. The defending champs were with out Davydenko Youzny, and Tursunov. Safin and Andreev stepped up big time. Big thumbs down to Versus and The Tennis Channel for not showing the Davis Cup matches live. I’m crazy enough to get up at any hour of the day and night to watch live tennis.

Brad said that Murray can win on grass. We'll see that next summer, I guess.

Re: The Captain Obvious Thread.

I don't know about you guys but I get a lot of satisfaction seeing Murray struggle and fail to produce under Brad "Genius. I Own A Mansion And A Yacht" Gilbert. Losing to washed-up AndyR at Cincy? Sooo satisfying. Now he eats a bagel vs. Hrbaty in Paris. Tee hee.

Especially because so many clueless types like the lady quoted above ("Andy Roddick made a mistake," she said) and the ones in GM had gone on and on about how Gilbert will work his magic on Murray and do what he did for Roddick and won't Roddick be sorry that he dumped Gilbert? Hm. Doesn't look like it. Ha!

Of course, Murray is natural talent and I fully expect better results from him next year. At the very least, far better fitness than he's shown so far. And he definitely needs an attitude adjustment.

Re: The Captain Obvious Thread.

WASHINGTON — Brad Gilbert was juggling a conversation about his newest protégé, Andy Murray, while signing autographs when a middle-aged woman approached.

"Andy Roddick made a mistake," she said.

Gilbert smiled but didn't take the bait. He's following the same advice he gives the players he coaches. Forget about the past and concentrate on the present.

Since Roddick, once the No. 1 player in the world, fired Gilbert in December 2004, his career has faltered. Roddick is likely to fall out of the top 10 for the first time since 2002.

Gilbert, after a stint as a commentator at ESPN, is back coaching. He signed a three-year deal to coach for Great Britain's Lawn Tennis Association. He'll work with several players but will concentrate on Murray, a 19-year-old from Scotland who is ranked No. 35 after beating Roddick in straight sets in the third round at Wimbledon last month. If Gilbert can get the teen to No. 1, that would be three players he's coached who made it to the top. The first was Andre Agassi.

As Gilbert likes to say, he's moved on.

"If I see Andy (Roddick), I say hello," Gilbert says. "I'm above it. He did fire me. If he wasn't feeling it, he has the right to make that decision. Then the ESPN thing came along and now this."

Updates from BG Nation:

7.26.2006 -

I'm leaving the comfortable ESPN commentary booth and heading back to the thing I love the most– the coaches box. I'm continuing my run of straight A's– after coaching AA, Andy, and a brief period with Mario Ancic I am now working with the young up and comer Andy Murray. The Kid has great talent and I am really excited to get to know him on a personal level in our first few weeks together. We're going to be starting things off with D.C, Toronto and Cinci leading up to the Open. It's going to be fun working with the LTA and its knew chief executive Roger Draper. Roger is definitely the guy who can push British tennis to the next level and I am happy to be on board.

7.25.2006 -

I talked to Andre before his first round match at UCLA he said that he feels great and he showed it, improving his record to 6-0 against Malisse yesterday. The way the X-man wilted in the second set you would have thought that he was the 36 year old. I’m also really pumped about the replay system to being used in the matches. The next step is to see on court coaching. I think it would add another dramatic element, especially if your guy is down in the match. I finally got The Tennis Channel, but I gotta say it’s a weak call that they are not covering the early rounds at a tournament that’s in their own backyard.

Doesn't sound as though he knows much about Murray!!
