Re: The Boodles Challenge Stoke Park 18th-22th June 2013

Went on Friday - Boodles Tennis - Dolgopolov v Querrey photo gallery http://bit.ly/127UA7G Querrey did not look like a player who should do well on grass. Maybe there was something wrong - either way the Ukrainian won easily

Dimitrov v Janowicz photo gallery http://bit.ly/109K27u Grigor stripped his shirt off at the end again - looked good and plays well. If he can keep his mind on his game he could be top 10 soon, but dating Sharapova he might get distracted a LOT

The opening match saw Juan Martin Del Potro feeling unwell allowing Richard Gasquet to beat him. It was a close, competitive match, but I could see Delpo going out early at Wimbledon if he does not get better soon

Re: The Boodles Challenge Stoke Park 18th-22th June 2013

The tournament began in style on Tuesday with an entertaining encounter between Janko Tipsarevic and rising star Grigor Dimitrov, with Tipsarevic edging out the young gun from Bulgaria 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 10-4 (in match tiebreak).

“This is only my second day on the grass. I was a little bit sick after the French Open so I took seven days off. In terms of ball hitting and serving and volleying, I’m feeling quite confident,” Tipsarevic told the crowd afterwards.

The match marked Dimitrov’s first outing on Stoke Park’s magnificent grass courts but he looked right at home. “The court was very, very good I enjoyed it a lot. I haven’t had that much fun in a while and it was a great atmosphere,” he said.

Defending The Boodles champion Marin Cilic made a happy return to Stoke Park in his match against Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia. Cilic won 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and fifteen minutes. “I love coming to The Boodles because it’s a little bit away from everything and it feels very relaxed. It’s a nice atmosphere and a good way to get practice on the grass.”

Sergiy Stakhovsky wrapped up proceedings on Day 1 with a 64 76(5) victory of Santiago Giraldo.

Their live stream is of better quality than that for many ATP tourneys.

Raonic definitely has a Wild Card for Eastbourne where he'll now be the top seeded player.

But if he lost early at Eastbourne he'd probably be found a match at Boodles 'cos it's an exhibition event and in the past has found space for an extra player or doubles pair (or British junior).

Boodles has always been flexible in giving top players a chance to play one or two matches if that is what helps them to prepare for Wimbledon. So, they have an 8-man draw BUT it's open to change to allow guys to opt out and others to take their place if needed.

Previously they played a round robin so most of the participants played 2 or 3 matches. Now (see post above from Stoke Park) they've got a knockout format but even so some of the players who lose on Tue or Wed may still be around (it has 5 or 6 great quality grass courts besides the show court) for practice and or to play an extra match in the afternoon of the "Semi-Final" or "Final".

It isn't like an ATP event.

I meant some players have matches not valid for the draw. Look at last year results and you will understand: In 2012 GGL, Haase and Golding played only one match in the last 2 days of the tournament. This tournament is different, many replacements, matches cancelled due to rain..

Hope to see some of you there!

Re: The Boodles Challenge Stoke Park 18th-22th June 2013

Does someone actually has some idea of what exactly is the tournament's format. I mean last year Cilic won the title and in the last day he beat Monaco, so I assume that was the final, but the funny thing is before that Monaco played only one match and lost to Golding. So I have no idea of what's going on in this tournament. If it's only some random matches, how they decide who is the winner at the end?

Re: The Boodles Challenge Stoke Park 18th-22th June 2013

it's a good way to see top players in action (3 matches per day) at half the price of tickets for Queens and way better value than the Hurlingham Club where prices start at £295.00!!!

It's an exhibition so you could argue that they don't try that hard but since it's their only probable match practice on grass most of them usually are fairly serious about winning. Losers play one another so all the players get 2 or 3 matches and there are often last minute appearances from those who aren't already in Queens/Halle/Eastbourne.

Very much a garden party atmosphere (as Kooyong, Guinot-MaryCohr etc) but it's a good day out (as long as it doesn't rain!) and I'm going for the 9th year 'cos it's only 20mins drive from where I live.

Nice field ..... they'll probably add a doubles pair or two and maybe a couple of British youngsters as well.
