I can't say enough about Vasek's performance so far against Italy. After going five sets on Friday against a top 20 player, he plays an extended fifth set in the doubles, serving impeccably in that fifth set. It's been a great display of fitness and mental toughness, reminiscent of his performance against Israel in 2011.
Second the sentiment. And he was slated to go against Fognini in a decider. I can see him taking this and making a real rankings run into the summer, into the top 75.
Vasek continues good form from DC. Off to the semi's in Mexico Challenger. Canada's #3 beats Swiss #3. Still waiting for the day when Canada's #1 beat's Swiss #1
Gets a bit of revenge on De Voest, in SA at that. Into the semis, against unseeded but in form Mate Pavic next. With the forty points picked up so far, will climb to about World No. 120 (he's now No. 131). A win over Pavic would give him 65 points and put him at No. 114 or so.
Winning the tournament would put him at World No. 103, btw.
And now into the finals with a 6-3, 7-6 win .. this is a 110 point challenger ... lots of points for not necessarily a strong field (probably because it is so far off the tour track) ... looks like a smart move for Vasek to head down there.
His scores this week weren't really convincing, but a win is a win. He's a good fighter. Serbia has chosen indoor clay for September's tie, so it would be nice to see what Vasek can do on clay.
Yay Vashy, even though it wasn't a pure win since the Pole retired on him, it's still nice that he beat de Voest on his turf, after Ric beat him on his soil recently and to take the title.
Vasek beats Berankis in Q1 at Rome .. saves 10 of 12 BP's in a close 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 encounter ... saved a bunch of them at *4-4 in third set. If he wins the next one & qualifies (tough match against Montanes), he'll be back inside the top-100.
Unfortunately I don't think this is on a televised court ... I'd like to see Vasek play on clay ... seems likes he's really improved. Actually, given the rain forecast for tomorrow & that he's up last on his court, chances are he won't even get to play.
