His fitness in best of 5 is still a question.
His returns have to be better and deeper, and the forehand must be more consistent, and his positioning more central to compensate for a drop in speed.
Winning finals in bigger tournaments has to be turned around.

Even his greatest fans admit his decline has been real.
One can't play poker, golf, and go fishing to be at the top level in tennis. Time enough for that when he is 60 years old.
In this game, if you are not working hard to improve, you fall back.

But luckily for him, some of the elite have slipped themselves and begun what looks to be a decline after much success.
Rafa may not need to be the monster he was in the past. However, he can't depend on that to continue. Someone like Novak can resume his former form if properly motivated.
I think it also would be a mistake to ignore or overlook a very fresh Federer if he decides to play, which I believe he will.

He has to be prepared for battle on clay. There is no other way.
He has always had the tools. He has a small window to put them all together for another run at the French Open title.

Respectfully,
masterclass

this is most likely his very last window of opportunity to finally get past pistol pete's record.

he has to go snatch Rome and then set his eyes on the ultimate conquest at RG.

the gods have parted the sea for him. why not capitalize.

Rome masters is huge now.

he has to take it and run over Djokovic in the process.

that will set the tables nicely for RG.

he doesn't have to go there like he did in 2015. like a coward.

now he can go there as the game's ultimate gladiator.

he was born to end lives. it is time to resume the destruction.

Congratulations to RAFA and his team for achieving the monumental feat of overcoming the prodigious Argentine, Guillermo Vilas!

Of course Rafa's achievement does not diminish Vilas', as Guillermo competed in the greatest age of clay players, most of the time playing second fiddle to the legendary Borg.

----

As has been mentioned, 'Project 16' is the remaining target in the Spanish Bull's quest.

But first 15 is needed. Will he pass the Wimbledon great Pete Sampras this year at Roland Garros?

Will he be able to break the powerful hold Pete and the Americans have had on the great Spaniard?

FYI, I'm still not completely happy with clay warrior...but it may not matter.

More later...

Congratulations,

Well at this rate he would very likely surpass Sampras in slam count... very impressive indeed

Knowing Nadal's luck, in USO, he could face a qualifier - Estrella Burgos - a Spaniard - another bendover Spaniard - Jaziri Malek (who upset Murray in the 4th round) - Dimitrov again (after defeating Nole in the qf) - and in the final face Kyrgios who beat Federer in the semi in 6-7 7-6 6-7 7-6 7-6 marathon, after which he celebrate too hard, resulting in stomach cramps for two days that makes him useless in his first slam final.

This scenario and route to USO final is not too far fetched, especially to Nadal himself as he has been bestowed such gifts several times.

Nadal will then truly cement himself as GOAT Luckdal.

Re: Rafael Nadal: Clay Warrior's Hunt for 50 Clay Titles & 16 majors, #50 comes where

Well, it didn't happen in 2016, and not in early 2017 during the Golden swing, but here we are at the start of the European Clay season in Monte Carlo.

So does #50 on clay come in defense of Monte Carlo?

Does he get his 15th major and 10th Roland Garros this year after a disappointing withdrawal last year?

Or is he done winning titles on any surface?

Judging by 3 finals on hc this year, he seems on the brink, so it may be hasty to write him off so soon.
But now Andy and Novak are set to return.

Clay Warrior has work to do.

And #49 came in Barcelona. OP updated.

Does clay title #50, RG#10, Major #15, come in Paris?

The numerology of multiples of 5 somehow seems appropriate...

50, 9, 14, doesn't quite have the same appeal, even if it were to come at a venerable tournament such as Hamburg.
