No reason he shouldn't stay top 20, all he has to do is keep being consistent, as he mostly has been this year (the odd dummy spit/panic attack aside).

But if he actually wants to go up, there are things in his game he needs to work on, and fitness and movement are top of the list.

An article on tomic finally breaking into the top 20, let's hope he can stay there.....

SBS - Tomic hits world's top 20 for the first time

Bernard Tomic has broken Samantha Stosur's unbroken six-and-a-half-year run as Australia's top-ranked tennis player after making the top 20 for the first time.

Lost in Australia's Davis Cup semi-final defeat was Bernard Tomic's milestone move into the world's top 20 for the first time in his career.

Tomic's first-day victory over Dan Evans in Glasgow was enough to vault the 22-year-old into an elite position in the rankings that he's been chasing since first picking up a racquet.

"This is what you play tennis for, to achieve goals in life," Tomic told AAP.

"I did at the age of 19 get to 27 in the world, which was very good, and now I'm finally a top-20 player.

"From where I started the year at 70 in the world and defending Sydney, that was very big for me and now to be in the top 20 in the world, I'm very happy."

In making the rise, Tomic breaks Samantha Stosur's unbroken six-and-a-half-year stint as Australia's top-ranked tennis player.

He is also the first Australian since Lleyton Hewitt five years ago to crack the top 20 in the men's rankings.

Perhaps it was his ambitious father John's spruiking when he won the 2009 US Open junior title that his son would "win 10 or 12 grand slams", but for whatever reason Tomic's breakthrough seems to have taken an age.

But the Queenslander now has the distinction of being the youngest player in the world's top 20 in a power-game era where the sport's stars don't peak until their late 20s.

It's not easy now with the players we have," Tomic said.

"To be at the highest level, the top five, top 10 is not easy. I have to use these moments and appreciate them.

"But over the last two months of the year I have to go for it and try to push to the top 15."

Tomic gained a first-hand insight into the gulf in class between men's tennis's grand slam contenders and pretenders on Sunday in a 7-5 6-3 6-2 loss to world No.3 and dual major champion Andy Murray.

The defeat not only ended Australia's Davis Cup final hopes, but also humbled Tomic.

"Andy shows you that he's there every point to play with you and this is why he's been a top-three player for the last six, seven years," Tomic said.

"For me, I have to get to that stage to stay with these guys, go deeper in points.

"I tried today but I couldn't keep his level up. It shows that if I want to get top five in the world I'll have to work hard.

"It just shows you that for me to get to his state of fitness I have to work hard because the biggest problem for me is fitness."

Interesting to hear that he thinks he isn't fit enough, it's certainly a very practical thing that he can work on, anyway.

Re: Bernard's Articles and News

Where is Papa Tomic when all this is happening? Very quiet it seems. No doubt working out how to blame TA for this scenario.
Perhaps Bernard could channel some of the money he is spending enjoying himself in Miami to help pay for sister Sarah?

Re: Bernard's Articles and News

Very stupid mistake by Bernard. At some point he will grow up and realise he is wasting the best years of his tennis career. I'm glad the police took a hard line with him here and arrested him. Apart from the fact he was in the wrong, this might be a wake up call for him.

Re: Bernard's Articles and News

What an idiot, playing into TA's hands.

If he is convicted he could find himself deported and unable to enter the US ever again.

Re: Bernard's Articles and News

Not a good idea to get on the wrong side of US enforcement officers. Bernie, Bernie...

Thinking further - does this mean Bernie can't travel to Bogota next week? Does he have to face court or surrender his passport?

Another contribution from Tomic fanboy Mr Schlink in the Herald Sun

LESS than a year after wallowing in the international rankings wilderness, Bernard Tomic has soared to No.10 in the ATP race to London.

Tomic has vaulted two places after the completion of Indian Wells, the first of the season’s ATP Masters 1000 events — a significant calendar milestone.

Mirroring Formula One’s points system, the ATP’s race starts with the first tournament of the season and ends at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris in November.

The top eight players — plus two alternates — are then invited to London to contest $8.25 million round-robin.

Alternate players are guaranteed more than $100,000 simply to be on standby.

On current standings, Tomic would be invited as reserve.

With winners of the four grand slam tournaments automatically guaranteed a berth at the November event, there are four places put aside for the players who compile enough rankings points to qualify.

Tomic’s excellent start to the season, without yet winning a title, has the Queenslander sitting alongside the world’s elite.

Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic leads the race from Melbourne Park runner-up Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, Tomas Berdych and Roger Federer.

David Ferrer, Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Rafael Nadal and Tomic are next.

Tomic currently has 755 rankings points.

Typically a tally of about 4000 is needed to secure a top-10 mark but with three of the four majors yet to be decided and eight more Masters events, there is a swag of opportunities ahead...
No harm in optimism I guess, but three reasons for caution:

1. Clay season is not Bernie's time.
2. Continuing retirements whenever...
3. A change process in a players attitude/approach is likely to have its ups and downs.
