Federer will retire for his fans, and Nadal for tennis fans.

Re: Will Federer or Nadal retire first?

If someone as Rosol starts to beat Federer in GS level he will retire but he still has high quality game. Roger has his age as an excuse but Rafa has not, His upset in 2rd at Wimbledon by number 100 Rosol will stay in his head forever .Now he is going to play more often then not with younger guys as Raonic,Dimitrov,Tomic Janovic and so on.They will want to take his scalp in the same way as Rafa,Novak,Murray,Del POtro did it against Federer. The difference is that those younger players have Federer as their idol not Rafa,Djokovic or Murray.Federer knows very well those young guys because he was the same more than ten years ago, He is the boy who defeated great Sampras. Djokovic,Murray,Nadal chased Federer more than 7 or 8 years now they will be chased. Raonic already beat Murray twice,Janowic did it once. How quickly things in tennis can change.

Which year was that? Cannot remember a long break before the current one, which has obviously lasted less than a year and also must be much closer to the end of his career than the middle. He started at 15. If he's at midpoint now, he'll play until he's 38.

Seriously doubt he will keep playing til then. His kids are getting older and will be starting school next year, he's starting to have issues with his back, and his game IS dropping off. At some stage in the next couple of years he'll start regularly losing to guys other than Murray/Nadal/Djokovic and when that happens he will stop being a regular Slam contender (let alone a contender for gold on clay in Rio). I doubt he will still be motivated to keep playing once that happens.

Unless Nadal's knees completely fall apart and force him to retire, he will play for longer.
Is it actually confirmed somewhere that Rio will be played on clay? From what I remember, the last speculation was that it might be played on hard courts.

As for the question: Both will probably retire sooner than expected but all the injury timeouts from Nadal should logically buy him some time, not retire him faster. IF Nadal hadn't been injured so much it would be a bigger chance that he retired before Federer. Now probably not.
Fully Agree

Re: Will Federer or Nadal retire first?

Federer seems to be enjoying tennis no matter what his ranking is and that is why I see him staying on for at least another 3-4 years. Rafa, I do not know. What if he starts slipping down the rankings? How happy would Nadal be as a top 10 or top 20 player? Would he still get enjoyment out of tennis, considering his past success? Answer to that question will tell us how long will Rafa stay on.
