Mahut/Herbert Defend Title In London

19 June 2016 | ATP Staff

Frenchmen celebrate fourth tour-level team title of season
Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert defended their doubles title at the Aegon Championships on Sunday with a 6-3, 7-6(5) sweep against qualifiers Chris Guccione and Andre Sa.

The top seeds broke twice in the first set and earned a mini-break on their first match point to win their fourth tour-level team title of the season. The Frenchmen captured three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments earlier this year (Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo) and now have won titles on hard courts, clay and grass this season. The win also marks their sixth career tour-level team title. Individually, Mahut has now won 15 tour-level doubles titles; Herbert, seven.

“We just stick together even when we have to go through bad times. We know each other pretty well,” Mahut said. “Also, we have a lot of confidence now from last year. We won a lot of matches, and we know when it's really, really difficult during the match, we are going to find a solution.”

After earning an early break, Mahut/Herbert were broken at 4-2 to put the first set back on serve. But the No. 2 doubles team in the Emirates ATP Rankings broke again and later served out the set.

Neither team could earn a break in the second, and they exchanged two mini-breaks in the early goings of the tie-break. But at 4-5, Mahut/Herbert won three consecutive points to improve to 2-0 against Guccione/Sa (Metz 2015).

“We started well from the beginning. We played a great first set. We missed a little bit of our chances in the beginning of the second,” Herbert said. “We kept it together and tried our best, and we are so happy to get through and win the title.”

Mahut/Herbert will receive 500 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points and split €120,900. Guccione/Sa will receive 300 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings point and split €57,130.

The champions looked forward to celebrating in their own ways. Mahut planned to to go back to France and spend time with his wife and son. Herbert was sticking around London. “I'm going to see Coldplay tonight so I have to hurry up,” he said.

The final was Guccione and Sa's second match of the day. They resumed their semi-final match with Frenchmen Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin at 3-3 after the match was suspended because of darkness on Saturday. Guccione/Sa won 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 in one hour and 24 minutes.

Herbert/Mahut Win Third Consecutive Masters 1000

Frenchmen come back from set down to claim Monte-Carlo title

Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut are the team to beat at the moment on the ATP World Tour. The French duo won their third ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown in a row on Sunday at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. The third seeds became the first French titlists at the Monte-Carlo Country Club since 1986 (Forget/Noah) as they defeated Australian Open champions Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares 4-6, 6-0, 10-6.

"We were playing well and we also had some luck," Mahut said. "When you win matches, you're more confident and you're able to relax when you play the important points. It can turn a match around, especially in the (match) tie-break."

The final was delayed due to rain – a rare weather blip in what has been a near-perfect week in the Principality – and it was Murray/Soares who started the stronger. The British/Brazilian duo missed the chance to serve for the set at 5-4, but broke again in the 10th game to clinch the opener.

"We were the better team the first set. We were returning well, playing good," Murray said.

From there, Herbert and Mahut went on a tear, reeling off the next six games to level the match, dropping just five points on their serve. They carried that momentum into the Match Tie-break and after establishing an early 5-1 lead, fought off any hopes of a fightback from Murray/Soares as they went on to prevail in 74 minutes.

After victories in Indian Wells (d. Pospisil/Sock) and Miami (d. Klaasen/Ram), Herbert and Mahut are the first team since Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in 2014 to sweep the first three Masters 1000 titles of the season. Herbert and Mahut captured their fifth tour-level title together, a haul that includes the US Open crown last year.

"We have been very humble on the court during the last month and a half," Herbert said. "After losing the first set, we could have been overwhelmed in the second. But we weren't. We kept fighting. That means in the long-term, we can be consistent day after day."

Murray and Soares were bidding to win their third title of the season after victories in Sydney (d. Bopanna/Mergea) and Melbourne (d. Nestor/Stepanek).
