This is a bummer.

Sadly, this is too common in the tennis world, the players don't take good enough care of themselves for some reason.

Too bad he's had back issues, glad he's back on court, hopefully he will be back playing matches soon.

I have hurt my back again

I wish I could tell you all right now that I am fully prepared for a new season and my injury woes are behind meÖ but Iím very disappointed to say that I have hurt my back again and itís not looking good. Itís actually worse now than before I had my surgery.

In my last blog I said I had encountered a minor issue during practice and it turned out to be just that. After a bit of rest, I was back to full practices, full workouts and for 2 1/2 weeks I was feeling great.

Then, during a routine practice, I felt something weird hitting a backhand and 20 minutes later I could barely walk. I had an MRI done the next day and it was bad news. The whole disc on which I was operated is in bad shape, and to make matters worse I also herniated another disc, right above it.

Things arenít looking all that well right now. I canít have another surgery on my back, otherwise I would have to have a procedure done which is called a Ďfusioní, and that would mean that my professional tennis career is over.

What I need to do now is start the complete rehab procedure again, just as I have done four or five times before I eventually decided to have the surgery done on my back in the first place. This will take three to four months at least.

The frustrating thing is that when I explained to my doctors how I went about my rehab after the surgery, they told me that I had done everything right. That I still injured myself again now makes it even harder.

I have been told that itís basically a 50/50 chance now for me if Iíll have a future as a professional tennis player. I could do everything right for the next few months and keep struggling with back issues, or maybe it will turn out to be a manageable situation in the future.

Thereís nothing left for me to do now than do all the rehab work once more. Walk on the treadmill, do my stretching exercises and work on my core. I have to try to stay patient and reset mentally.

Hopefully in my next blog Iíll be able to give you better news. Thanks for reading and supporting me.

Rhyne said that he had similar pain on the other side of the operated area after practicing in November. Per Martin Blackman, R was out training with Smee and Kudla last weekend but since then didn't see him in any videos, very unusual...have a feeling his back may have acted up again. Hopefully, that's not the case.

Trying to stay positive. A new video, I really miss R

Successful surgery

Itís nice writing to you all again. Even though I havenít played any tournaments since June, I do have some good news. About six weeks ago I had back surgery, and the doctors are optimistic that I will be able to make a full recovery and leave all my back pain behind me!

A disc in my back was basically crushing my nerve, which was the reason for my ongoing pain. During the procedure they cut me open about an inch and used a laser to shave down the disc a little to where it makes space for the nerve.

These past weeks I have been rehabbing in Tampa and it is my goal to make a return to the pro tour at the start of next season, which will be in January. As my ranking has dropped down completely I have to basically start all over in the lowest level of international tournaments.

In some ways it definitely scares me to have to start from the beginning again, but Iím very eager to get going. Itís going to be interesting to see how it goes. I may not be able to hit a ball in the court anymore, haha.

I feel so much better now than before the surgery. Just getting out of bed doesnít hurt anymore and I am able to put on my socks without pain. The last time I could do this must have been somewhere around October last year.

It was not fun to have played at about fifty percent of my abilities in the time before I decided to get the surgery done. In fact it was actually a nightmare. Now the hard part is done and Iím feeling optimistic about what lies ahead. Almost every athlete goes through some kind of injury and itís part of the game, unless youíre Roger Federer. Iím actually pretty lucky to have gone through 10-12 years without injuries.

I have already been going to the gym for five days a week and Iím doing a lot of swimming as well. I get all my rehab done in the mornings, so thereís plenty of time for me to relax too. The doctors have told me that the more I can rest and sleep, the better.

Iím spending a lot of my downtime fishing, which is my obsession, haha. I have the feeling I can already start to hit balls again now, but I have to be careful not to rush into things. In fact, I have been reminded this week again to make sure I take my time.

Two weeks from now Iíll head back to Tennessee, because a good friend of mine is getting married. Itíll be nice to spend a week with the family there as well. If all goes according to plan I should be able to be back in my normal training routines at the start of December.

Fingers crossed!

Rhyne
