Sweetheart draw, but he has done well to take advantage.

Into the semis with a straight TB set win over Evan King. Will get the winner of Pavic and Peliwo.

Re: Frank Dancevic

Fancy Frank defeats Schnur... NID Schnur would lose when he went a break up in the 3rd set.

Next match very winnable so with Frank...

Re: Frank Dancevic

He's playing in the Columbus Challenger, and draws Schnur in the first round.

Re: Frank Dancevic

Apparently he is transitioning to a doubles specialist. He's got a good chance to do well I think.

Re: Frank Dancevic

From my post in GM - reposting here. This is Frank's 8th time in US Open qualies, I've seen them all, and this was the biggest roller coaster of them all

Quote:
Dancevic def. Vanni - Match of the day - for many reasons. Great crowd supporting both players, particularly in the 3rd set when it filled up as the evening was starting. But the pure drama of the late 3rd set was the highlight. Overall, I've come to expect most Frank matches at qualies to be roller coasters, but this might be the best I've seen. First set was even but Frank was the better player, frequently getting into Luca's service games, but as has been an achilles in his career, couldn't take break points. He got broken in a lazy game at 4-5 down and it looked like he was toast. Early second set was predictable back and forth, with Luca serving better and taking his service games easily, and Frank winning 75% of the points that got into a rally. The match turned at the end of the 2nd, when Frank put together one of his "Fancy Frank" games where he hit a spectacular volley off a let cord that landed on the line, and then followed that up with a running backhand passing shot to break and held easily. Third set was much of the same - Vanni serving well, and Frank targeting the Vanni backhand and taking a lot of pace off the ball to force Luca to generate his own pace, which he rarely did well. For good measure, Frank was dropping a ridiculous amount of silky smooth drop shots to exploit Luca's subpar movement. Anyways, match really took off at 3-3 in the third set. Frank got a break of serve through some more great shotmaking (and drop shots) and the first signs that Vanni was getting tired, as the DF's started to mount. Frank held easily for 5-3, and then all hell broke loose so to speak. Frank got two of his 8 match points in the game after two DF's from Vanni, but failed to convert either - a missed backhand on the first and a service winner from Vanni on the second. Vanni held, and everyone knew Frank would get super tight in the next game. Boy he did, and the game lasted probably 15 minutes. Dancevic missed almost all his first serves except for a couple, and even on ground strokes was pushing like hell. He missed MP #3 on DF, then had to fend off a break point, missed MP #4 on a Vanni backhand winner down the line (bravo Luca), then missed MP #5 on another DF, had to save another break point where he was a sitting duck at the net and Vanni just missed the passing shot, missed MP #6 on a Vanni forehand winner, missed MP #7 on another DF, then saved a BP on a disputed ace (which I saw as I was right on the line - it clipped the line) which frustrated Vanni, and then got to match point through a nice forehand, and then FINALLY took MP #8 on an approach to net with some depth (finally!) to Vanni's BF which he put in the net. I'm not sure this report fully captures what the atmosphere was like and how tense the game was, but these are the moments why I live for qualies above anything else. The crowd really got into too with one guy who just decided he was going to become Vanni's number one fan and was screaming like crazy anytime there was a break point or throughout the last game, which prompted another guy to do the same for Frank. One thing I wish would improve is Frank's general attitude - I've rarely seen someone dispute so many line calls, and he's been doing it for 10 years! But he seemed looser today during the match, almost at times like a guy who isn't taking this so seriously but still wants to win (if that makes sense). Tomorrow though we get the senior tour match of qualies - Dancevic vs. Robert - will be fascinating who shows up.
