Excellent result over Pierre-Hughes. Another Frenchie, Paul-Henri Mathieu awaits, and is quite beatable.
Go John, showing that the Oz Open was not just good luck and timing.

Great chance to reach the Final here
It's certainly been a fantastic tournament for the unseeded players! While you're right that with his newfound confidence (and brilliant serving on that fast surface) John does have a great draw, PHM is no pushover and if Zverev awaits in the SF that will be a very big test.

But what a great week so far - career high ranking, Top 20 in the race, and one more win will push The Mailman into the mid-50s in the rankings! He does have those Kyoto Challenger points coming off at the end of this month, however it would be great to see him hit his target of a Top 50 ranking so quickly into the season...

An excellent week for John (with a little assistance from Schwartzman's retirement). Hopefully this sets him up well for the rest of the year.
More than a little! Schwartzman outplayed John totally right up until 4-2 in the third...but having got a lucky break there, the Muller win was all John's doing, so I guess it all evened out.

This run does indeed put a floor under John's ranking right through to Wimbledon - he's now guaranteed not to drop out of the Top 100, so direct entry to RG and Wimby is assured. I can't blame him for entering every tournament that he can at the moment; he wouldn't want to end up like last year, where almost all of his points defence had to be crammed into about 8-9 weeks at the end! And while we'd love to see some deep runs, it's highly likely there will be some R1 losses over the next little while, and John has shown that he will listen to his body these days and pull the pin if necessary to rest.

One thing I hope this run has done is bring John to public attention and following a little more. He may feel very comfortable out of the spotlight, but his gentlemanly approach on court stands as a refreshingly stark contrast to others in Australian tennis at the moment, and his story is a very inspiring one.

I think his biggest problem last night was his serve - even when making first serves he didn't have great placement, which meant Tomic was able to return and get into the rallies. I think he's top-40 material off the ground (particularly when his backhand DTL is firing), but without a serve to give him regular free points he's going to struggle to make it too much higher.
Millman's serve has more fizz on it now than when he first came back after his second shoulder surgery...but it certainly could be beefed up even further and made more accurate. He is more proactive at ATP level with going for winners than he is in Challengers - but I think he still lacks for variety in his solid and deep groundies; he hardly ever slices a ball or tries a drop shot, and you need these in your arsenal at the highest tier.

As someone mentioned earlier, he has a very heavy schedule coming up - Montpellier, Memphis and Delray main draws, and currently entered for Acapulco qualifying, before (presumably) qualifying for Indian Wells and Miami. I'm guessing he's looking to capitalise on that top-100 ranking and the lack of points to defend in the first half of the year (he only needs about 30 more to have defended everything before Wimbledon), but given his injury history, I hope he isn't overdoing it.

so proud of him anyway

Ritz So Johnny's run at the AO comes to an end albeit not without a fight to Lord Bernard. Taking something out of this game, i really hope that Millman can develop a weapom on court because he lacks a penetrating shot which can hurt opponents. His consistency is good enough for lower tier tennis but at the top end it wont cut it. I reckon he also needs to come into the net more often when the opponents are on the defensive. He sometimes jjust let loose balls sail back into play and it basically restarts the rally. But overall, a successful campaign to someone who deserves every bit of it. Go John!
