and he had semi final points to defend from last year. Sadly set for a huge slide down the rankings.

Re: J.P. Smith

JP looking good for awhile against Swiss Marco Chiudinelli (ATP136), winning the first set 6-1, but goes down in three in the 2nd round at Newport, losing 6-1, 36, 36.
A pity for Jipper.

Re: J.P. Smith

JP Smith gets a win in an ATP event, 64 64 first round winner over compatriot Jordan Thompson on the grass at Newport.
Jipper likes playing his fellow Aussies, knocking off Duckworth last week and now Jordie this week.
Keep going JP

Re: J.P. Smith

JP gets the better of compatriot Duckworth in the first round of the Challenger tournament in Winnetka, liking the lighter US balls and winning 64 67(2) 61.
Good result for JP, Duckworth's bad trot continues.

Maybe explains why JP was very expressive of his emotions during the match with lots of Comes ons which i do not hear a lot from him.

Re: J.P. Smith

Yes, I think it's a case of JP playing the percentages - even if he were to enter some clay events, would he really succeed against others who are much more comfortable on the surface? So he may believe that by sticking with hardcourts and then moving straight onto grass that he stands a better chance of advancing his ranking.

Of course, this is the same guy who thought (maybe not that unreasonably) that the best path to cracking the Top 100 after the USO last year was going to do the European indoor swing rather than heading to Asia, which just didn't work at all...

But perhaps his unexpected run to the doubles QFs in Miami with Omar has put a bit of pep in the Jipper's step. Here's hoping!

Well he's never played a lot of clay - literally only a couple of futures, literally only a couple of challengers and three rounds of qualies. Still, a bit odd I agree given did actually win one of those futures, and won a round of qualifying at RG last year.

Have to assume he just really doesn't like clay...bit of a shame though, would have liked to see him team up with Omar again, though would have struggled to get in I guess.

Re: J.P. Smith

Massive underdog against the man ranked hundreds of spots below him. Lets hope he gives a good showing, though maybe not too good since I'm on the comeback bandwagon

Nah, great match and like to see how his game matches against one of the best. Let's just hope he plays his best tennis. Don't be a Kudla.
