Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

Jason is down to #352 in the world. What on earth happened after that US Open qualifying loss? I hope he has not hurt his knees again!

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

I don't disagree with any of those sentiments - but it must also be acknowledged that Jason has had a very underwhelming 2015 based on his own efforts. Injury could have played a part in that, but not to get past 20 rankings points in any event entered over the last six months has put all his gains from 2013-14 in severe jeopardy now.

I'm sure financial considerations played some part in his participation in Wimbledon and US Open qualies...and provided he can start winning somewhere soon to avoid a total rankings wipeout, proving to himself that he can play on grass and hard as well could be an important moment for his future career.

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

I wish this lovely kid would get a break. He travels unfunded and with his lovely loyal girlfriend Sally by his side. I wish sometimes that some of these high profile players could swap shoes for a few months with Jason to learn what it is like to be out there struggling trying to make ends meet. He deserves to succeed.

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

AH well, at least he made it through the match and put in a decent score.

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

Well, he tried, and that's the main thing - winning even one round was always a bit of a long shot, but the positive for Jason is that he was reasonably competitive on what must seem like a totally foreign surface to him now.

Sounds like he got through the match OK as well, and if so, perhaps that puts the Australian summer in the frame for 2016.

Now back to European clay to try and get something out of this year and stay in the Top 300...

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

Too bad. Jason had break points in the first set but could not convert, Unfortunate.
Hope his knees came through ok.

Jason goes down 7/6 6/2 sadly.

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

I'll be happy if he just makes it through the match. Good luck Jason.

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

Not a bad US Open qualifying draw for Jason:

[15] Alejandro GONZALEZ (COL) vs. Marcos GIRON (USA)
Pedro SOUSA (POR) vs. Ramkumar RAMANATHAN (IND)
Jason KUBLER (AUS) vs. [30] Facundo BAGNIS (ARG)

Polsh journo Marek Furjan posted an interview with Jason on his blog (the interview took place during Poznań Challenger)
Here's a link, it's in Polish, some really insightful comments from Jason

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

Well, it looks like Jason will step out voluntarily onto a hard court for a competitive match for the first time in almost 5 years this week at Flushing Meadows.

While it's difficult to see him achieving a massive breakthrough, I really do hope his knees are able to make it through OK, and he develops enough confidence so that hard can perhaps form a limited part of his scheduling from now on - it would be a shame for him never to get another chance to appear at his home tournament in Brisbane, at least.

It's what will happen after the US Open that interests me. Jason's ranking will collapse even further once his Challenger win points drop off at the end of September, barring a miracle, and from that point it will probably be back to the Futures grind for him. He has shown that he can play the game very hopefully he is able to find something and mount another charge back up the rankings.

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

He has nothing to defend through August, perhaps this time of year he has designated as break time. He had been overseas for a long time anyway.

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

Perhaps more to the point - I wonder what surface these AMTs are being played on? The website says "various surfaces"...

While I don't disagree that Jason isn't really doing himself any favours by not staying on tour, if he's playing on hard courts, I suppose being at home (and therefore not spending money) against pro-am opposition who he should comfortably beat could be his way of psychologically getting used to winning on the surface and gaining confidence that his knees will stand the strain.

You really do get the sense that this is an "all or nothing" gamble for Jason - either he will injure himself again (which we all hope is not what happens!), or he will prove to his mind that he can do short stretches on hard...which he's going to have to do if his ranking goes back to the 300s, which is how it's currently looking.

Re: Jason Kubler Cheering Thread

Why is he playing AMT's in Brisbane? He should be in the States playing challenger tournaments if he is really going to play U.S open qualifying.

Southend Aussies Playing AMT in Brisbane over the last two days.
