2012 MTF Popularity Contest News Thread

aka High School Backstabbing Contest.

Yes it is that time again. The ACC is over and now it is time to crown the most popular poster on MTF. MTF is in a bit of a flux these days with many new people.

I will take my cues from Nathii's running of the 2010 contest, a contest she ran exceptionally well.

1. This year's edition is run by myself, Johnny Groove and Freak3yman84.

2. The idea is to choose the most popular poster on MTF. Everyone has got their own definition of "popularity," but remember this is a positive contest - reversed to ACC. You vote for someone you like, find intelligent, think they're good contributors to the board, are charismatic, funny, awesome.

3. Nominations will run for a few days, maybe a week, until we get sufficient nominations. 128 probably, but maybe more or less. Seedings will be done by nominations.

4. You must have at least 300 posts to add a nomination because of the sad experiences with double accounts in the past (this gives some more safety). There are no restrictions to how many people you nominate, but you are only allowed to nominate a given poster once.

5. Note to everyone - if you want to insult someone, go to the ACC threads. This one is opened already now because word on a street says there will be also other contests and all should close before Christmas, when people are still around the computer and can participate.

6. We don't mind a little bit of controversy - it occurs every year and makes things more entertaining, but it needs to be at moderate level. You are allowed to give reasons to the votes and the previous editions have clearly showed on average basis this is *not* an arselicking contest (if you have doubts, take your time to read threads from the previous years rather than base of own first impression). Jokes are jokes, but if someone feels *seriously* harassed do not hesitate to send us a PM. We'd like to handle this behind the scenes alone or with a mod participation if unsolvable otherwise.

Reminder: A semifinalist from two years ago, bad gambler, not only didn't beg or campaign but was unaware he achieved that round! A finalist from last year, Peta Pan, didn't campaign herself and didn't have anyone else doing it for her! A semifinalist, adee-gee, was away from the computer in a foreign country and barely aware how he was progressing here! A quarterfinalist, TMJordan, was on holiday in Miami and didn't vote/beg/campaign/post at all! You cannot say only being fake nice during the contests lifts you up high here. No.

8. Withdrawals are generally not accepted especially for the reasons like "I am afraid I will not win," "This contest is run by a Rafatard and a manipulative bitch," "I may not get as many votes as I would like," "I was away for the whole year and nobody knows me anymore, and I probably will lose in R1," I am too old for this," "I don't have enough v-cash to buy votes and bad gambler's account disappeared so he won't give me a present," "A person who doesn't like me might vote for my opponent on purpose" If you really have a valid reason send us a PM and we will discuss it.

If there are any more rules that need to be discussed, I will add them here.

Johnny says he didn't even receive any PM, just suddenly logs in and *boom* - banned for a double account.

I think this was stupid at the very least to ban someone who is running a popcon, in the middle of the final, for something which in fact may be questionable. It's obvious that in the past users were at least asked (including in the popcons :tape: ) to explain the situation.

JG doesn't have the most trustworthy image here, but mods also had their share of screw ups, so we have the right to ask

Sorry to disappoint you, but I don't think any mod even thought for a second that we might be disrupting an off-season contest. I know at least for me, I didn't even know he was running the contest.

There was no thought that we were ruining your contest or whatever. Sorry

Well, 2 or 3 mods were probably aware of the ongoing popcon and its organizer, because they withdrew  If bans really are not done lightly, like it is stated in the rules, then perhaps this one was discussed?

Unless in case of IP clash you have a tool of automatic ban, which I know it's not true, because I was asked once behind the stage about two posters who were my friends, and they were a real life couple. This situation from the past proves delicate cases (especially that regard very long time members) CAN be handled delicately.

Leng jai and tripwires were receiving PMs regarding Ajdeman before any ban was imposed, this I know for sure as well.

So a member shouldn't be banned since they are running a competition?

Or if we ban a member during a competition then we didn't take it seriously? I'm not sure I see any correlation at all.

What if we ban a member during TT? Does that mean we aren't being serious, or should we just wait for a convenient time to ban a member?

Or are you suggesting that we should use favoritism for users certain users?

Regardless of whether JG was in the middle of running this contest when he was banned (which isn't relevant), the fact that he wasn't sent a PM enquiring about the alleged double account raises serious concerns. If the moderators of this forum really take the offence of a double account as seriously as they purport to, then it is reasonable to expect them to at least raise the issue with the suspected offender and give him the chance to explain himself before banning him outright. The fact that this was done in the past (and I can personally attest to it) but apparently not for Johnny Groove not only speaks volumes of the consistently inconsistent moderation of this forum, but also the absolutely thoughtless way in which this ban was carried out.

It seems like I won. I will write my thank you speech when it's not 3 a.m. :wavey:

Not each situation is the same. Sometimes there is much more evidence or proof than other times. That will be all I say about why there was no PM sent. The decision was made with the information we have and it is the correct one. At MTF, we do not have public trials where we display all of our evidence and at MTF, there should not be any preferential treatment for any user.

Congratulations on winning the contest.

Finally, since JG retired from MTF anyway, I'm sure he won't even mind his ban, right? ;)

The users Manon and Chooper were also banned in a rush two years ago and never had the time to explain themselves.

The way moderators ban in this place is weird, it is so sudden you dont even feel guilty. And usully when you feel guilty (say bitter things to other people, do other ermm things), they dont ban you. :p

Snowwy is a bit scary he speaks with some superiority i have snowwyfobia :scared:

I think the moderators here need a public relations persona to talk for them, someone like Nathaliia or, lets say, cobalt60, for example, warm and nice, that could make us feel guilty for doing bad things and feel sorry we disrupted this place. the same way a minion would say to his master. " I am sorry, whip me, love you master"

Freakyfool was being his normal self so he unsurprisingly got permabanned.
JohnnyGroove got temp banned for having a duplicate account. Everyone is playing the guessing game at trying to figure out which it was.
Tripwires won the contest.
Other random temp bannings.

I never understood why people had double accounts, it makes no sense for me.

everyone has this need of trolling and in order to not ruin their "reputation" they create a DA to troll

congrats to Viruzzz on final and Feldman on a world record 4 straight pop QF's - the 2 undoubted stars of the championship

the real triumph of the contest was the domination of Fedtards in the last stages and the fact was zero Dull fans there.
