Well, he should have won in 2 - leading 5-3 in the first - but John gets the job done over Pouille in the end, 6-7(3) 6-3 6-4.

A fairly steady start to his grass season, but a big test awaits (literally!) in the form of the gentle giant himself, Juan Martin Del Potro. Millman's return game and defensive scrambling will have to be on full blast for that one, but he's not without a shot.

Mailman has the better grass record of 15-9 over Pouille's 3-8.
hope John will get in 2.

Really impressed watching the few games they showed of John versus John. John played very well.
Just wonder if he had had more clay court play prior to RG, if Mailman could have converted those break point opportunities - he would have won in straight sets.
Great match Milkman.

Well, for someone who did not play on clay at all coming in, I think John did creditably well against Isner - he certainly would be rueing all those blown set points in the 2nd and 3rd though.

Given the packed nature of his grass court schedule coming up, exiting RG now is probably not so bad...gives his ankle just that little bit more time to get right, and he can also start practising on the green stuff quickly.

the Mailman has a good match against Isner.
the match suspended around at 2200H w/ Mailman's 76(4) 67(12) 00.

OK, so this article today - which is actually more about John's quest to play at the Olympics - gives us a few more clues.

John has made it to Paris, and obviously at this stage intends to play RG:

“I’m trying to manage my left ankle going into the French,’’ he said.

And quite a good summation of the fact that he needs to find 48 points from somewhere during this next ranking period, even if it omits for convenience the fact that he is also down to play the Manchester Challenger.

Not so sure about this para, though:

Tomic (sic) said his French Open hopes were best served by pulling out of the ATP Geneva event.

A tad too much Bernie on the brain there at News Ltd, methinks!

Now while it would be possible for someone to hobble around with a busted ankle if they were spending most of their time sitting down, knowing how professional John is about managing his body, I highly doubt he'd go out on the town if there was any risk of exacerbating things.

So for now I am taking this as a positive sign that it can't be a particularly horrendous injury.
i dont if you guys watched footy but Jack Riewoldt twisted his ankle few weeks back and post-game it was severely swollen and he was able to play the next game so hopefully thats the case for John as well.

In principle you need to have played three DC ties over the last couple of years - Thanasi, Nick, Bernie and Sam all meet the criteria. But there is an exception clause for those not selected because weren't ranked highly enough previously, or because of depth of country talent. The requirement is meant to exclude those who refuse to play DC, not those who didn't have a chance to.

may i ask you the source, please?
scotthongkong knows John, so statements such as that are almost always straight from the horse's (or should that be The Mailman's!) mouth.

What a wretched turn of events. What is it with that Seoul Challenger and Aussie ankles? Barton broke his there last year, and now this has happened to Millman!

Obviously Geneva is out, but I'm curious to see what happens from here. If there's any surface which is kind on your ankles, it would be clay, but if John goes to RG he would have had exactly zero matchplay on the red stuff.

I guess if medical advice shows that a few weeks off is necessary, the silver lining is that now is the exact time to do it. John would only lose 48 points between now and Wimbledon, which is where his surge began last year, and he's still in Wimby and the USO.

Quite.

I guess Australia could chose to send fewer than its entitlement of four singles players, but on the face of it John will surely be in the qualifying range, and Thompson has a fairly good chance of making it in too (depending of course on number from other countries who don't play and earning a few more points between now and close off date).
